Located 31 km (19 miles) from Cusco at an altitude of 2,970 meters (9,700 feet), Pisac is the gateway to the Sacred Valley. The tour continues to Ollantaytambo, a historic town that has been continuously inhabited since Inca times. The narrow streets and ancient water channels of Ollantaytambo reflect its Incan heritage. The bus ride from Cusco to Puno departs at 7:00 am and arrives in Puno at 5:00 pm, with stops to explore several notable locations:
ANDAHUAYLILLAS: Known as the “Sistine Chapel of America,” this church is a prime example of Andean religious art. Its interior features intricate decorations, including a beautifully carved ceiling adorned with pan de oro (gold leaf).
RAQCHI (Temple of Wiracocha): Located 121 km from Cusco, this Inca temple is an impressive structure measuring 100 meters long, 26 meters wide, and 14 meters high. It’s divided into two naves, each supported by 11 giant stone columns, and is surrounded by qolqas (storage areas) and other Incan structures.
LA RAYA: The highest point along the route, at 4,335 meters above sea level, offers stunning views of the landscape. It’s a geographic boundary between the Quechua and Aymara cultures, where you can see llamas and vicuñas roaming the high-altitude plains.
PUKARA: The oldest and most important ceremonial center of the Altiplano, predating Tiwanaku. It features a series of tiered platforms and litosculptures, offering insights into the ancient Andean civilization of the region. This is where the origins of the Andean culture in the Altiplano were discovered.
After breakfast, we embark on a two-hour motorboat journey across Lake Titicaca, which spans the border between Peru and Bolivia, to visit the unique floating Uros Islands. The Uros people, also known as the Water Tribe, have created these islands by layering the totora reed, a local plant, over time. Their homes and boats are also made from this reed. The islands, numbering over forty, are equipped with strategic defenses like watchtowers for protection.
Next, we travel to Amantani Island, home to more than 3,000 Quechua-speaking natives who still follow ancient traditions, primarily focused on ceramics and textile production. You’ll have the chance to explore Inca and Tiwanaku archaeological sites. The island offers stunning views of the lake, and you’ll want to stay for both the breathtaking sunset and sunrise.
Lunch will be a simple meal provided by us, followed by an overnight stay at a local family’s home on the island, where you’ll experience the warmth and hospitality of a typical Amantani household.
After a hearty breakfast, you’ll visit Taquile Island, a narrow, hilly island covering about 15 square kilometers. Historically, it was used as a prison during the Spanish colonial period. You’ll have the chance to meet the island’s residents and admire their vibrant textile crafts, which have been their traditional trade for centuries. Enjoy a scenic hike across the island, followed by a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Later, you’ll return to Puno Port by 5:00 pm.

Really enjoyed the experience with friends, something to cherish for the rest of my life. If you go I highly recommend you ask for Fernando. He was our guide for the entire trip. Extremely knowledgeable and made the experience that much more memorable. He started the trip as a guide and by the end became a friend, the time you spend on the trek, you really want someone who fits with your group and I can't imagine a better person who could fit better in anyone's group. As well, the trek itself was difficult but very enjoyable, something to push yourself to your limits. Every day was extremely rewarding, not to mention the hot springs was well worth it. Fantastic and absolutely recommended. They offer a very interesting package both for the price and for the service. Our guide Fernando Illapa taught us a lot about Inca history and the Andean way of life. He and our cook were very attentive and cordial throughout the experience. Our food was amazing and the camping equipment in perfect condition. D r2024-01-27Verified an unforgettable experience It was a wonderful experience. From the beginning Wayra gave us all the information, always attentive and answering all our questions. During the trip we had Fernando Illapa as our guide. We must say that he is a great professional, thoroughly knowledgeable about the path and with a great sense of humor and a lot of patience, which made everything easier in the most demanding moments of the Inca trail. The accompanying team is very organized and I must say that the food exceeded our expectations. Dishes that could well be served in a restaurant and extremely abundant. We did the road with my husband and there were very difficult sections of great physical demand, but the impressive landscapes and discovering archaeological sites along the way make it worth it. We were also fortunate to have excellent travel companions. An unforgettable experience with the help of a professional team that paid attention to all the details.
