Manu Reserved Zone 6 days is a protected area located in the Amazon rainforest of southeastern Peru. It forms part of the larger Manu National Park and is recognized for its exceptional biodiversity. The zone is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, including many that are rare or endangered.
The area is primarily inhabited by indigenous communities, some of whom live in voluntary isolation, and it serves as a critical conservation zone to protect these cultures, as well as the surrounding ecosystem. The Manu Reserved Zone covers a vast expanse, featuring diverse habitats, from lowland tropical rainforests to high-altitude cloud forests.
It is a hotspot for ecotourism, with birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts often visiting the region to observe rare species like the Andean condor, jaguars, and the giant river otter. However, access to the Manu Reserved Zone is tightly regulated to minimize human impact on the fragile environment.
Our journey to Manu National Park begins early in the morning as we depart from Cusco. Along the way, we will make a stop at the mysterious Ninamarca Chullpas, ancient pre-Inca funerary towers set within striking Andean landscapes.
We will then continue to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, where you will have the opportunity to learn about its rich history, cultural traditions, and distinctive colonial architecture.
After our visit to Paucartambo, we will travel to Acjanaco Pass, the official gateway to Manu National Park. From this point, we will begin our descent into the lush cloud forest, making several stops along the route to observe a remarkable variety of wildlife, including exotic birds, orchids, and giant ferns.
One of the highlights of the day will be the opportunity to observe the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird, in its natural habitat near the San Pedro area.
In the late afternoon, we will arrive at our first accommodation, Bambu Lodge, where you will enjoy a delicious local dinner. In the evening, your guide will provide a detailed briefing about the upcoming activities for the following day, ensuring you are well prepared for the adventure ahead.
Morning – Journey to Atalaya & River Navigation
After an early breakfast at Bambu Lodge, we begin the day with a scenic one-hour drive to Atalaya Port (500 m / 1,640 ft). Along the way, there is an optional opportunity to visit a local wildlife rescue center, where you may observe animals undergoing rehabilitation.
Upon arrival at Atalaya, we board a motorized boat and navigate for approximately 40 minutes along the winding waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River, entering deeper into the heart of the rainforest.
Midday – Machuwasi Lake Exploration & Thermal Baths
Our adventure continues with a guided jungle walk of about 45 minutes toward the serene Machuwasi Lake, where the surrounding forest offers excellent opportunities to observe monkeys and other wildlife along the trail.
At the lake, we board traditional rustic catamarans to quietly explore its tranquil waters in search of remarkable wildlife, including the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin and the world’s largest rodent, the Capybara.
Afterward, we continue by boat for approximately 1.5 hours to the community of Shintuya, where a freshly prepared lunch awaits. Following lunch, you will have time to relax and enjoy the soothing natural thermal waters of Aguas Calientes Hot Springs, surrounded by lush rainforest scenery.
Afternoon to Evening – Arrival at Dorado Lodge & Night Exploration
In the afternoon, we resume our river journey with a final two-hour boat ride leading us to Dorado Lodge, our accommodation deep within the jungle. After settling in and enjoying a delicious dinner, the adventure continues with an exciting guided night walk through the rainforest.
During this nocturnal exploration, you will have the opportunity to observe fascinating creatures such as snakes, tarantulas, and night monkeys in their natural environment. We will also visit a nearby mammal clay lick, where, with some luck, we may spot species such as tapirs and wild pigs gathering in the darkness.
Early Morning – Entering the Reserved Zone
Awaken to the powerful calls of howler monkeys echoing through the rainforest, a truly unforgettable start to the day. After breakfast, we begin a two-hour boat journey to the Limonal Checkpoint, the official entrance to the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park.
Following the required registration process, we continue navigating deeper into this strictly protected area, where human impact is minimal and wildlife thrives in its purest form. Along the sandy riverbanks, known for attracting wildlife, there is an excellent opportunity—if luck is on our side—to spot the elusive Jaguar, one of the most iconic predators of the Amazon.
Midday – Otorongo Lake & Canopy Observation Tower
As we continue navigating for approximately 4 to 5 hours through breathtaking Amazonian scenery, keep your eyes open for wildlife along the riverbanks, including large Black Caiman and slow-moving Sloths resting high in the trees.
Upon arrival at Otorongo Lake, we will climb a 20-meter-high observation tower that rises above the forest canopy. From this exceptional vantage point, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding rainforest while searching for the endangered Giant River Otter and aquatic turtles that inhabit the tranquil waters below.
Afternoon to Evening – Arrival at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
In the afternoon, we continue with a short 45-minute boat ride to Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, our home for the next two nights, located deep within the Reserved Zone and managed in collaboration with the local Matsiguenka community.
After settling in and enjoying a satisfying dinner, you will have the option to participate in an evening night hike led by your guide. This nocturnal exploration offers a unique opportunity to observe fascinating rainforest creatures such as colorful frogs, bats, and a wide variety of exotic insects that become active after dark.
Salvador Lake & Wildlife Observation
At first light, we set out on a short 20-minute boat ride toward Salvador Lake, where the rainforest awakens with the sounds of wildlife greeting the new day. Upon arrival, we board a traditional catamaran to glide silently across the calm waters, allowing for exceptional wildlife observation without disturbance.
This tranquil setting offers one of the best opportunities to observe the lake’s top predators, including the endangered Giant River Otter, as well as elusive Green Anaconda and various species of aquatic turtles resting along the shores.
Mid-Morning – Macaw Clay Lick Experience
After returning to the lodge for breakfast, we take a 30-minute guided walk through the forest to reach a vibrant macaw clay lick, one of the most spectacular natural events in the Amazon. Here, witness an extraordinary display of color and sound as flocks of Scarlet Macaw, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, and other parrot species gather to feed on mineral-rich clay, an essential part of their diet. This remarkable gathering creates a truly unforgettable wildlife experience.
Afternoon – Matsiguenka Culture & Monkey Exploration
Following lunch at the lodge, you will have free time to engage in cultural activities led by members of the local Matsiguenka People community. During this experience, you will learn traditional survival skills and have the opportunity to practice archery techniques used for generations in the rainforest.
Later in the afternoon, we cross the river to begin a specialized guided hike along forest trails known for their high concentration of primates. This excursion provides excellent chances to observe species such as Spider Monkey, Squirrel Monkey, and Howler Monkey moving through the canopy.
We conclude the day with dinner at the lodge, followed by an optional night walk for those wishing to continue exploring the rainforest’s fascinating nocturnal life.
Early Morning – Downriver Wildlife Exploration
We begin the day before sunrise, departing early to take advantage of the quiet morning hours—one of the best times to observe wildlife along the riverbanks. As we navigate downstream, keep watch for large mammals resting along the sandy shores, including the possibility of encountering the elusive Jaguar in its natural habitat.
During this scenic river journey, we will enjoy lunch on board while continuing our navigation for approximately four hours toward the Limonal Checkpoint, marking our exit from the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park.
Afternoon – Upstream Navigation to Papaya Lodge
In the afternoon, we continue our journey by traveling upstream along the winding waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River for approximately four additional hours. Along the way, enjoy the ever-changing rainforest scenery as we make our way to Papaya Lodge, where we are expected to arrive between 3:00 and 4:00 pm.
Upon arrival, you will have time to relax and settle into the lodge before enjoying a carefully prepared dinner by our chef, featuring fresh and flavorful local ingredients.
Evening – Optional Shelter House Experience or Night Walk
In the evening, guests have the option to participate in a unique overnight experience. A guided 45-minute walk leads to a specially designed shelter house located near a mammal clay lick, offering a rare opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife in a safe and comfortable setting.
From this vantage point, you may have the chance to spot fascinating species such as the Tapir, Ocelot, and Armadillo as they gather during the night. The shelter is equipped with comfortable beds and mosquito nets, ensuring both safety and comfort while observing wildlife.
Alternatively, guests may choose to remain at Papaya Lodge, where a guided night walk around the surrounding forest offers another opportunity to discover the fascinating nocturnal life of the Amazon before resting for the night.
Morning – Return Journey to Atalaya
After breakfast at Papaya Lodge, we begin the final stage of our expedition with a peaceful boat journey lasting approximately four hours along the winding waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River, gradually leaving behind the dense rainforest that has accompanied us throughout this unforgettable adventure. This reflective journey offers a final opportunity to take in the beauty and sounds of the Amazon before returning to civilization.
Midday – Ascent to the Andes & Scenic Drive
Upon arrival at Atalaya Port, our private transportation will be waiting to begin the scenic drive back toward the majestic Peruvian Andes. As we ascend through changing landscapes, from lush rainforest to highland valleys, we will make a comfortable stop along the route to enjoy a satisfying box lunch surrounded by beautiful natural scenery.

Posted on Sara DVerified 10/10 Experience - Would Recommend! We had an amazing time on the Salkantay 5 Day Trek. Before the trip started, Quechuas had great communication and was very accommodating to our travel schedule, including adjusting our briefing time with our guide. The skydome accomodations were great (all fairly spacious, with exception of night 2, which was fine as we didn’t spend much time there), the food was delicious (a great variety and always more than enough to go around) and the trek itself was beautiful. Our guide Steven, as well as second guide Jorge, were very patient, knowledgeable and kind to us and the others in our group - not only did we get to see incredible scenery but we also learned a lot about the local landscape and culture. We rented sleeping bags, which we would highly recommend. We brought our own hiking poles but would recommend renting if you don’t bring your own.Overall, an amazing experience and we would highly recommend this company.Posted on Matthew WVerified Seamless and Supportive Inca Trail Experience – Highly Recommend We recently completed the 4-day Classic Inca Trail trek with Quechuas Expeditions in June 2025, and overall had a fantastic experience that struck the perfect balance between physical challenge and logistical ease. Our guide, Fernando (“Nando”), was outstanding—passionate, deeply knowledgeable about the trail’s rich history, and highly supportive throughout. He kept our group motivated and informed, and managed different paces and needs with professionalism and care. His English was great, and he always made time to answer questions or share interesting stories along the way.The porter and chef team were phenomenal. Every meal was different, delicious, and plentiful—we were never hungry, and dietary needs (including vegan and vegetarian) were handled without issue. They even baked a custom cake on the trail for a couple’s anniversary, which speaks volumes about their care and capability. The porters themselves were friendly, warm, and constantly going above and beyond to support us.Quechuas provided tents, sleeping bags, a toilet tent, and hot water for face washing each morning, plus coca tea as a wake-up touch. The duffel service was useful, though we did find the weight limits a bit tighter than expected once you factor in the sleeping bag. In the end, we paid for an extra porter—which was easy to arrange but worth noting for those planning their packing. One thing we didn’t know in advance: the porter bags aren’t waterproof, so future trekkers may want to use dry bags or line the inside with plastic.Another small consideration: due to how campsites are assigned (by the government, not the tour company), some days ended up being longer than the traditional day-by-day breakdown you might read online. While not Quechuas’ fault, for myself, as much heads-up as possible would’ve helped with my own mental preparation. All said, Quechuas Expeditions delivered where it mattered most. The logistics were smooth, the staff was superb, and their support allowed us to focus on enjoying the trail and the breathtaking views without worrying about the rest. This is a company that knows what it’s doing.Would I recommend them? Absolutely—whether you’re a first-time trekker or experienced hiker, they make an unforgettable journey that much more seamless and enjoyable. If I ever do this again, I would book with them without question, and if possible, request the exact same team. Thank you Fernando and team for a trip of a lifetime and memories that will stay with me forever 🙏Posted on Arianna OVerified Amazing trip on the Inca Trail with Quechuas Expeditions I never imagined that the Inca Trail could be so transformative. My partner and I decided to do the classic 4-day trek with Quechuas Expeditions and, honestly, it exceeded all our expectations. From the very first moment we felt very welcome. The service was impeccable, they were always attentive to our needs, solving all our doubts before and during the trek. The hike was not easy, but the views, the fresh mountain air and the energy of the group kept us going without thinking about how tiring it was. The meals at the campsites surprised us pleasantly, we really did not expect so much variety and flavor in the middle of the mountain. And the end, reaching Machu Picchu through the sun gate (Inti Punku) was simply magical, there are no words to describe that moment. It is definitely a unique experience that connects you with the history, culture and nature of Peru. Thank you Quechuas Expeditions for making this trip so special!Posted on naomiammarVerified Hardest challenge of my life but worth it One of the hardest things I have ever done (definitely underestimate the difficulty level), and I don’t know if I would have made it if it wasn’t for our awesome guide Frenando and all the amazing staff we had. What a fantastic group of people. The porters are so hard working, it’s so humbling. The chef Taco was fantastic! I am vegan and he made me the most amazing food the entire time. I couldn’t believe it. And then our guide Fernando topped it all. Knowledgeable, professional yet fun, very personable, very patient (we were slow!) and very encouraging. If you are considering taking on this challenge, I highly recommend Quechua’s Expeditions and if you can request Fernando. E sure to do so. He’s been doing this for 19yrs!Posted on cade cVerified Awesome trek We really enjoyed our trip. It was challenging and also rewarding. Beautiful views and even better food. I can’t rave enough about our cook Santiago! Food was unbelievable. Jose did a fantastic job leading us along the way. He did a good job of explaining what we are seeing! Looking for a physical challenge with beautiful views this is the trek for you.Posted on Lola UVerified Demanding, enriching and unforgettable thanks to the human team I will always be grateful to the rich food and attentions of Santiago, the cook, the professionalism and good advice of José, the guide, the kindness of the helpers, who have made it possible to improve the experience.Posted on Julia C.Verified Amazing trek, amazing guide and staff The Salkantay Trek was absolutely stunning, domes and the views were great with hot water available. What the trek made very special was our guide Nildo. Also, the chef Julian, horseman and second guide were incredible too. Nildo was knowledgeable, caring and passionate about everything he shared. I cannot imagine a better guide :-) Everything was very well organized.Posted on Emelie AVerified Hike of a lifetime! We had the most amazing time! The different sceneries along the trek are just unbelievable and although being two fairly unfit persons we could enjoy it all the way. Fernando and Steven are terrific guides making sure we were all comfortable and happy at all times. The food and accommodations along the way were also a lot more luxurious than what we’d expected. Would 100% recommend this to anyone who’s up for a hike!!
