Choquequirao Trek 4 Days Overview

Choquequirao Trek is one of the most popular alternative treks in Cusco. Although this four day Classic Choquequirao Trek does not take you to Machu Picchu, the trek has gained a lot of popularity among travelers in South America.

Choquequirao Peru, the Inca Ruin was built in the same era as Machu Picchu, also by the Inca Emperor Pachacuti. Both Choquequirao and Machu Picchu have similar architecture and are popularly known as “Sacred Sister Cities”.

The name Choquequirao in Quechua means “Cradle of Gold”. It nestles on a hill top at 3033 meters above sea level (9951 ft.).

When the Spanish invaded Peru, the Incas abandoned the complex and moved to the jungle. Due to its remote location, high up in the Quriwayrachina mountain range, the Spanish could not conquer it.

The whole complex gradually got covered under thick encroaching jungle. Its existence was unknown until 1710 when a Spanish explorer, Juan Arias Diaz found it when he was resting his mules after a prospecting trek.

However, in the 1970s the local authorities began excavating the ruins. In fact till date, a third of the entire complex has been excavated and is open for visitors. Even today when you visit Choquequirao Ruins, you will feel like you are the first one to find it.

Best time to hike to Choquequirao Peru

Although Choquequirao Peru can be visited anytime of the year, the best time to visit is between March and November, during the dry season.

Hiking to Choquequirao is challenging. The trek starts with a downhill hike and takes you up the hill. This follows with another set of downhill and uphill hikes to reach the complex. To enhance tourism to Choquequirao, local authorities are planning to install a cable car from the nearby village.

During the trek, you will be experiencing a diverse weather condition. Due to the difficulty in getting to the complex, it just attracts a handful of tourists a day.

The trek however, offers staggering views of the Apurimac canyon. The region is home to several distinct species of flora and fauna. All the way through the trek, you will be rewarded with picturesque sights of highland valleys and villages snuggled amidst the snow capped Andean peaks. You will also have the opportunity to see the famous “flight of the Andean condors”.

Please note that this is a high altitude hike. We highly recommend that you spend a few days in Cusco before the trek to acclimate and avoid altitude sickness.
