Choquequirao Trek is one of the most popular alternative treks in Cusco. Although this four day Classic Choquequirao Trek does not take you to Machu Picchu, the trek has gained a lot of popularity among travelers in South America.
Choquequirao Peru, the Inca Ruin was built in the same era as Machu Picchu, also by the Inca Emperor Pachacuti. Both Choquequirao and Machu Picchu have similar architecture and are popularly known as “Sacred Sister Cities”.
The name Choquequirao in Quechua means “Cradle of Gold”. It nestles on a hill top at 3033 meters above sea level (9951 ft.).
When the Spanish invaded Peru, the Incas abandoned the complex and moved to the jungle. Due to its remote location, high up in the Quriwayrachina mountain range, the Spanish could not conquer it.
The whole complex gradually got covered under thick encroaching jungle. Its existence was unknown until 1710 when a Spanish explorer, Juan Arias Diaz found it when he was resting his mules after a prospecting trek.
However, in the 1970s the local authorities began excavating the ruins. In fact till date, a third of the entire complex has been excavated and is open for visitors. Even today when you visit Choquequirao Ruins, you will feel like you are the first one to find it.
Although Choquequirao Peru can be visited anytime of the year, the best time to visit is between March and November, during the dry season.
Hiking to Choquequirao is challenging. The trek starts with a downhill hike and takes you up the hill. This follows with another set of downhill and uphill hikes to reach the complex. To enhance tourism to Choquequirao, local authorities are planning to install a cable car from the nearby village.
During the trek, you will be experiencing a diverse weather condition. Due to the difficulty in getting to the complex, it just attracts a handful of tourists a day.
The trek however, offers staggering views of the Apurimac canyon. The region is home to several distinct species of flora and fauna. All the way through the trek, you will be rewarded with picturesque sights of highland valleys and villages snuggled amidst the snow capped Andean peaks. You will also have the opportunity to see the famous “flight of the Andean condors”.
Please note that this is a high altitude hike. We highly recommend that you spend a few days in Cusco before the trek to acclimate and avoid altitude sickness.
Your epic Choquequirao Trek begins with an 0430AM transfer from your hotel in Cusco. We will embark on a 4.5 hours drive in our private transport to Capuliyoc. It is a remote Andean village at 2915 meters above sea level (9564 ft).
We will be meeting our support crew, horsemen, and chef here. We will be serving breakfast here, while our support crew will get things organized on a horseback. Our local expert will be briefing you on hiking the Andes and will share some tips.
All set, we will begin the Choquequirao Trek with a gradual uphill hike to Capuliyoc viewpoint. The route will take us through some highland communities and farmlands. Once we reach the viewpoint, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Snow Capped Padereyoc peak.
After contemplating the views and getting an introduction to the Andean mythology, we will begin with a three hour hike down the hill to an Oasis, Chiquisqa. We will then continue further down to Playa Rosalinas for lunch.
Our chef and support crew will be hiking a little bit ahead of the group so they can have everything organized while you get there. After lunch, we will begin with a gradual uphill hike with more alluring views of the Apurimac Canyon to our campsite in Santa Rosa Baja. It is at 1900 meters (6234 ft).
As we reach the campsite, our crew will serve hot drinks and appetizers. Our guide will direct you to your respective tents which will be already set for you. In the evening, we will be eating a freshly cooked Andean meal under the clear skies.
We will be waking you up to a cup of freshly brewed Peruvian coffee followed by a traditional Andean breakfast. We will then begin our hike up the hill to Marampata through Santa Rosa Alta. Marampata nestles at 2925 (9596 ft).
You will be getting the first views of Choquequirao from here. The archaeological complex is just two hours away from here.
On our hike to Choquequirao Peru, we will be hiking through the dense tropical jungle. Our tour guide will be explaining to you the features of different plants along the route. You will also have the opportunity of spotting Alpacas and Llamas in their natural habitat.
As we will reach the Choquequirao campsite, our crew will be serving you a traditional lunch. After lunch, we will enter the Inca complex for an immersive tour. Our local expert will be explaining the history and why the complex was built. You will understand how the Spanish conquest had an impact on its existence and how the Incas left the complex abandoned.
On this guided tour, we will be visiting the Pikawasi sector. We will continue with a visit to the main plaza, remains of the ceremonial sites, Inca temples, and the priest’s house.
Once you have contemplated the views of the complex, we will be visiting the iconic Llama Sector. You will understand the prominence of these Andean camelids to the Incas. The Incas used Llamas to transport crops and other products.
To express their gratitude, they decorated the gray stones with an image of llamas with 24 white stones in between.
You will have plenty of time to soak in the views and also witness the sunset from Choquequirao before returning to the campsite for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
You will be waking up to the sound of chirping birds as the rays of the rising sun shimmer on the walls of Choquequirao. We will be serving you a hot cup of coffee. We will have your breakfast ready while you will be sipping in the coffee admiring the Incan masterpiece.
After breakfast, we will be hiking down the hill to Cocamasana.
Along the way, we will be crossing Maranpata. This time we will stop to tour some farms here. Locals here cultivate potatoes, quinoas and more. Our local expert will be explaining the process along with the head of the farm.
After witnessing this, we will be hiking through the blackberry farm to Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa is well known for its Avocado plantations. You will see plenty of Avocado plants here.
You will have the opportunity of savoring their traditional beverage, Chicha de Cambray. It is a fermented beverage.
Once you have enjoyed this, we will continue with a hike to Playa Rosalinas where we will be serving you lunch.
After lunch, we will be hiking through a dense tropical region to Chiquisqa campsite where we will be spending the third night camping.
After an early morning breakfast, we will be hiking for four hours, up the hill to Capuliyoc, where we started the trek.
Our support staff will be parting ways here. We will be meeting our driver for our journey back to Cusco. Along the way, we will be having a couple of stops and also have lunch before reaching Cusco.
We will be reaching Cusco by 0500 PM.

Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night. We recommend the use of a duffel bag or backpack, whichever is easiest for you to carry. A good size daypack is also essential.

Our food was amazing and the camping equipment in perfect condition.D r2024-01-27an unforgettable experience It was a wonderful experience. From the beginning Wayra gave us all the information, always attentive and answering all our questions. During the trip we had Fernando Illapa as our guide. We must say that he is a great professional, thoroughly knowledgeable about the path and with a great sense of humor and a lot of patience, which made everything easier in the most demanding moments of the Inca trail. The accompanying team is very organized and I must say that the food exceeded our expectations. Dishes that could well be served in a restaurant and extremely abundant. We did the road with my husband and there were very difficult sections of great physical demand, but the impressive landscapes and discovering archaeological sites along the way make it worth it. We were also fortunate to have excellent travel companions. An unforgettable experience with the help of a professional team that paid attention to all the details.Agnieszka Z2024-01-25A must in Peru The whole experience was amazing!
