Starting from the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, the journey takes you through high-Andean landscapes inhabited by vicuñas, llamas, and alpacas. The first day is a steady 3-hour hike to base camp at 4,600 meters, where trekkers spend the night under a clear Andean sky.
The second day begins before dawn, with a demanding 6-hour climb to the summit. From the crater rim, you’ll witness panoramic views of Arequipa, the surrounding volcanoes Chachani and Pichu Pichu, and, on clear days, even the distant Coropuna glacier.

Embark on an unforgettable adventure to the summit of Misti Volcano (5,822 m.a.s.l.), the majestic guardian of Arequipa. This 2-day / 1-night camping trek via the Aguada Blanca route blends stunning natural scenery, high-altitude challenge, and breathtaking rewards.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive through the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, home to graceful vicuñas and vast Andean landscapes. From the trailhead at 4,200 meters, you’ll hike three hours to base camp, where you’ll set up tents, share dinner, and rest beneath the starry Andean sky.
In the early hours of the second day, the true adventure begins. With headlamps lighting the way, you’ll ascend through sandy slopes and rocky paths for about six hours until reaching the crater rim of Misti Volcano. At the summit, the effort is rewarded with 360° panoramic views—the city of Arequipa spread out below, the neighboring volcanoes Chachani and Pichu Pichu, and on clear days, the distant snowcapped Coropuna.
After taking in the silence and grandeur of the summit, you’ll descend to base camp and return to Arequipa by afternoon.

08:00 am: Pick-up from your hotel (within the historic center of Arequipa) in a 4×4 vehicle. Once we are fully equipped for the adventure, we will head towards the northern face of the majestic Misti Volcano, entering the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, a protected natural area home to vicuñas, llamas, alpacas, and diverse high-Andean wildlife.
08:30 am: Departure from Arequipa. After approximately 3 hours of driving, passing by the Aguada Blanca dam checkpoint, we will reach our starting point at 4,200 m.a.s.l. From here, we begin a 3-hour hike towards base camp, where we will set up tents, enjoy dinner, and rest under the stars.
Very early, around 01:00 – 02:00 am, we begin our summit attempt. The ascent takes about 6 hours of demanding trekking over sandy and rocky terrain. Reaching the summit of Misti Volcano (5,822 m.a.s.l.), you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Arequipa city, the Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanoes, and, on clear days, even the Coropuna glacier. After enjoying this unique experience, we descend back to base camp and then to our transport. Approximate return to Arequipa: 14:00 hrs.

Before the trip started, Quechuas had great communication and was very accommodating to our travel schedule, including adjusting our briefing time with our guide.The skydome accomodations were great (all fairly spacious, with exception of night 2, which was fine as we didn’t spend much time there), the food was delicious (a great variety and always more than enough to go around) and the trek itself was beautiful. Our guide Steven, as well as second guide Jorge, were very patient, knowledgeable and kind to us and the others in our group - not only did we get to see incredible scenery but we also learned a lot about the local landscape and culture.We rented sleeping bags, which we would highly recommend. He kept our group motivated and informed, and managed different paces and needs with professionalism and care. His English was great, and he always made time to answer questions or share interesting stories along the way.The porter and chef team were phenomenal. Every meal was different, delicious, and plentiful—we were never hungry, and dietary needs (including vegan and vegetarian) were handled without issue. They even baked a custom cake on the trail for a couple’s anniversary, which speaks volumes about their care and capability. The porters themselves were friendly, warm, and constantly going above and beyond to support us.Quechuas provided tents, sleeping bags, a toilet tent, and hot water for face washing each morning, plus coca tea as a wake-up touch. The duffel service was useful, though we did find the weight limits a bit tighter than expected once you factor in the sleeping bag. In the end, we paid for an extra porter—which was easy to arrange but worth noting for those planning their packing. One thing we didn’t know in advance: the porter bags aren’t waterproof, so future trekkers may want to use dry bags or line the inside with plastic.Another small consideration: due to how campsites are assigned (by the government, not the tour company), some days ended up being longer than the traditional day-by-day breakdown you might read online. While not Quechuas’ fault, for myself, as much heads-up as possible would’ve helped with my own mental preparation.All said, Quechuas Expeditions delivered where it mattered most. The logistics were smooth, the staff was superb, and their support allowed us to focus on enjoying the trail and the breathtaking views without worrying about the rest.
