Machu Picchu is both the best and the least known of the Inca ruins. It is not mentioned in any of the chronicles of the Spanish conquistadors and archaeologists today can do no more than speculate on its function. Although Machu Picchu was known by a handful of Quechua farmers in the area, it was not until the American historian Hiram Bingham stumbled on it, almost by accident, on July 24, 1911, that the rest of the world became aware of its existence.

The Rainbow Mountain of Peru, also known as Vinicunca, is stunning and can be seen on the spectacular Ausangate Trek. Ausangate mountain itself is considered a holy mountain (Apu or mountain spirit) by local Peruvians and is the deity of Cusco. Since pre-Inca times the mountain has been a place of worship and offerings and this tradition continues today. We have designed this hike so that it can be done as a day trip!

Our Machu Picchu Expeditions offers authentic travel experiences led by professional local guides with deep knowledge of Andean history and culture. Tours are designed in small groups to provide a more personal, flexible, and responsible way to explore Machu Picchu and its surrounding regions.
Guided Machu Picchu tours include an official entrance ticket to Machu Picchu and a licensed professional guide who provides historical and cultural insight during the visit. Tours also handle entry schedules and circuit access according to current regulations.
Entrance coordination and timing management are also included. Guided tours handle assigned entry times, circuit schedules, and group flow to ensure a smooth visit without confusion or delays.
Depending on the tour type, guided Machu Picchu tours may also include hotel accommodation, meals, and additional guided visits in the Sacred Valley or Cusco, especially in multi-day or hiking-based programs.
Our Machu Picchu tours are led by licensed, professional guides who are trained under Peruvian tourism regulations and have extensive on-site experience at Machu Picchu.
Many of our guides come from Andean communities and have a strong cultural connection to the region. This local background allows them to share perspectives rooted in living traditions, not just textbook history, creating a more meaningful and human experience.
Our guides are also trained in visitor management and conservation rules, ensuring tours follow current site regulations while maintaining a smooth and respectful flow through the citadel. Clear communication, patience, and adaptability are key qualities that define our team.
Machu Picchu has a subtropical mountain climate, influenced by its location between the Andes and the Amazon basin. This results in relatively mild temperatures year-round, with clear differences between the dry and rainy seasons rather than extreme heat or cold.
This is the most popular time to visit. Days are generally sunny with clear skies, ideal for hiking and photography. Rainfall is minimal, but nights can be cold, particularly in June and July. July and August are the coldest months and also the busiest.
Rainfall increases significantly, with January and February being the wettest months. Showers often occur in the afternoon or evening rather than all day. In return, the surrounding mountains and cloud forest become intensely green and vibrant. February sees temporary closures of some trekking routes, such as the Inca Trail, due to maintenance and safety.

Step beyond the classic viewpoints and discover lesser-known corners of the citadel that reveal a quieter, more intimate side of Machu Picchu. These hidden gems add depth, meaning, and a sense of discovery to your journey.
Travelers consistently praise our Machu Picchu Tours for knowledgeable guides, punctual service, and personalized attention. Their reviews reflect the confidence and satisfaction of booking with expert operators.
Posted on Sara DVerified 10/10 Experience - Would Recommend! We had an amazing time on the Salkantay 5 Day Trek. Before the trip started, Quechuas had great communication and was very accommodating to our travel schedule, including adjusting our briefing time with our guide. The skydome accomodations were great (all fairly spacious, with exception of night 2, which was fine as we didn’t spend much time there), the food was delicious (a great variety and always more than enough to go around) and the trek itself was beautiful. Our guide Steven, as well as second guide Jorge, were very patient, knowledgeable and kind to us and the others in our group - not only did we get to see incredible scenery but we also learned a lot about the local landscape and culture. We rented sleeping bags, which we would highly recommend. We brought our own hiking poles but would recommend renting if you don’t bring your own.Overall, an amazing experience and we would highly recommend this company.Posted on Matthew WVerified Seamless and Supportive Inca Trail Experience – Highly Recommend We recently completed the 4-day Classic Inca Trail trek with Quechuas Expeditions in June 2025, and overall had a fantastic experience that struck the perfect balance between physical challenge and logistical ease. Our guide, Fernando (“Nando”), was outstanding—passionate, deeply knowledgeable about the trail’s rich history, and highly supportive throughout. He kept our group motivated and informed, and managed different paces and needs with professionalism and care. His English was great, and he always made time to answer questions or share interesting stories along the way.The porter and chef team were phenomenal. Every meal was different, delicious, and plentiful—we were never hungry, and dietary needs (including vegan and vegetarian) were handled without issue. They even baked a custom cake on the trail for a couple’s anniversary, which speaks volumes about their care and capability. The porters themselves were friendly, warm, and constantly going above and beyond to support us.Quechuas provided tents, sleeping bags, a toilet tent, and hot water for face washing each morning, plus coca tea as a wake-up touch. The duffel service was useful, though we did find the weight limits a bit tighter than expected once you factor in the sleeping bag. In the end, we paid for an extra porter—which was easy to arrange but worth noting for those planning their packing. One thing we didn’t know in advance: the porter bags aren’t waterproof, so future trekkers may want to use dry bags or line the inside with plastic.Another small consideration: due to how campsites are assigned (by the government, not the tour company), some days ended up being longer than the traditional day-by-day breakdown you might read online. While not Quechuas’ fault, for myself, as much heads-up as possible would’ve helped with my own mental preparation. All said, Quechuas Expeditions delivered where it mattered most. The logistics were smooth, the staff was superb, and their support allowed us to focus on enjoying the trail and the breathtaking views without worrying about the rest. This is a company that knows what it’s doing.Would I recommend them? Absolutely—whether you’re a first-time trekker or experienced hiker, they make an unforgettable journey that much more seamless and enjoyable. If I ever do this again, I would book with them without question, and if possible, request the exact same team. Thank you Fernando and team for a trip of a lifetime and memories that will stay with me forever 🙏Posted on Arianna OVerified Amazing trip on the Inca Trail with Quechuas Expeditions I never imagined that the Inca Trail could be so transformative. My partner and I decided to do the classic 4-day trek with Quechuas Expeditions and, honestly, it exceeded all our expectations. From the very first moment we felt very welcome. The service was impeccable, they were always attentive to our needs, solving all our doubts before and during the trek. The hike was not easy, but the views, the fresh mountain air and the energy of the group kept us going without thinking about how tiring it was. The meals at the campsites surprised us pleasantly, we really did not expect so much variety and flavor in the middle of the mountain. And the end, reaching Machu Picchu through the sun gate (Inti Punku) was simply magical, there are no words to describe that moment. It is definitely a unique experience that connects you with the history, culture and nature of Peru. Thank you Quechuas Expeditions for making this trip so special!Posted on naomiammarVerified Hardest challenge of my life but worth it One of the hardest things I have ever done (definitely underestimate the difficulty level), and I don’t know if I would have made it if it wasn’t for our awesome guide Frenando and all the amazing staff we had. What a fantastic group of people. The porters are so hard working, it’s so humbling. The chef Taco was fantastic! I am vegan and he made me the most amazing food the entire time. I couldn’t believe it. And then our guide Fernando topped it all. Knowledgeable, professional yet fun, very personable, very patient (we were slow!) and very encouraging. If you are considering taking on this challenge, I highly recommend Quechua’s Expeditions and if you can request Fernando. E sure to do so. He’s been doing this for 19yrs!Posted on cade cVerified Awesome trek We really enjoyed our trip. It was challenging and also rewarding. Beautiful views and even better food. I can’t rave enough about our cook Santiago! Food was unbelievable. Jose did a fantastic job leading us along the way. He did a good job of explaining what we are seeing! Looking for a physical challenge with beautiful views this is the trek for you.Posted on Lola UVerified Demanding, enriching and unforgettable thanks to the human team I will always be grateful to the rich food and attentions of Santiago, the cook, the professionalism and good advice of José, the guide, the kindness of the helpers, who have made it possible to improve the experience.Posted on Julia C.Verified Amazing trek, amazing guide and staff The Salkantay Trek was absolutely stunning, domes and the views were great with hot water available. What the trek made very special was our guide Nildo. Also, the chef Julian, horseman and second guide were incredible too. Nildo was knowledgeable, caring and passionate about everything he shared. I cannot imagine a better guide :-) Everything was very well organized.Posted on Emelie AVerified Hike of a lifetime! We had the most amazing time! The different sceneries along the trek are just unbelievable and although being two fairly unfit persons we could enjoy it all the way. Fernando and Steven are terrific guides making sure we were all comfortable and happy at all times. The food and accommodations along the way were also a lot more luxurious than what we’d expected. Would 100% recommend this to anyone who’s up for a hike!!
Planning a trip to Machu Picchu often comes with many questions, from ticket options and entry times to transportation, weather, and guided visits. This FAQ section is designed to provide clear and up-to-date answers to the most common questions about Machu Picchu tours.
To get to Machu Picchu, you first need to take a train from Ollantaytambo or Poroy to Aguas Calientes, the town located near the site. From there, you will take a bus to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Alternatively, you can opt for a trekking experience, such as the Inca Trail, which allows you to enjoy the landscape along the way. It’s essential to book transportation and entrance tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
Tour options for Machu Picchu vary depending on the experience you're looking for. You can choose a guided day tour, which typically includes train transportation, entrance tickets, and a guide who will explain the history of the site. There are also private tours, offering a more personalized approach, or small group tours ideal for those seeking a quieter experience. If you're interested in additional hikes, such as the ascent to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, some tours include these options with additional permits.
Yes, it’s highly recommended to book your tour to Machu Picchu in advance, especially during peak season (June to August), when the demand for tickets and services is higher. By booking early, you'll not only secure your spot on the train and entrance to the site but also have the opportunity to choose between various tour options, from budget-friendly to more exclusive experiences. Additional hikes, like Huayna Picchu, require limited permits, so booking months in advance is crucial.
It is possible to visit Machu Picchu without a guide, but having a local guide can significantly enhance your experience. Guides are knowledgeable about the history, architecture, and cultural significance of the site, helping you understand what you’re seeing. They can also recommend the best spots for photos, share local legends, and ensure you don’t miss important details. A guide makes the visit more informative and engaging.
The best time to book your tour to Machu Picchu is during the dry season, from April to October, when the weather is more stable and pleasant. However, June to August is the busiest period, so if you want to avoid crowds, consider traveling during the shoulder months, such as April, May, or September. If you plan to do additional hikes like Huayna Picchu, make sure to book your tour several months in advance.
A typical one-day tour to Machu Picchu lasts between 6 to 8 hours, including the train ride (approximately 3 hours each way), the bus trip to the entrance, and time spent exploring the site. If you decide to take an additional hike, such as to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you will need extra time. These hikes can take 1 to 2 hours, so the entire tour may extend to 10 hours, depending on your activities.
Yes, there are tours designed for families with young children or people with reduced mobility. These tours are tailored to make the visit as accessible as possible, including comfortable transportation and guides who adjust the pace of the tour according to the group’s needs. While Machu Picchu's terrain is uneven and has many stairs, some tours provide alternatives to minimize walking. It’s recommended to check with the tour operator about the best options if you have specific needs.
It’s important to wear comfortable clothing suitable for the varying weather in Machu Picchu. Lightweight clothing for the day is recommended, but also bring a jacket or sweater for the cooler mornings and evenings. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat for sun protection, water, snacks, and your passport, as it is required to enter the site. Large backpacks are not allowed inside Machu Picchu, so it’s best to bring only the essentials in a small bag.
There are no food or drink facilities inside Machu Picchu, so it’s advisable to bring water and some light snacks. However, in Aguas Calientes, the town near the site, you will find various restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy local cuisine before or after your visit. Some more exclusive tours also include meals or snacks during the train journey or in nearby restaurants.
Yes, Machu Picchu has a daily visitor limit, with a fixed number of tickets available each day. This limit is in place to preserve the site and prevent overuse. To ensure you get a spot, especially during peak season, it’s essential to book your tour and tickets in advance. Otherwise, you may risk not getting in, as tickets often sell out quickly during the busier months.
Machu Picchu sits at an altitude of 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level. While this is lower than other cities like Cusco, some visitors may still experience mild altitude sickness, such as dizziness or headaches. It’s recommended to stay hydrated, take it slow, and avoid strenuous exertion. If you’re already in higher-altitude areas like Cusco, it’s best to allow some time to acclimatize before visiting.
Yes, you can do the hikes to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain on the same day as your visit, but these hikes require additional permits, which must be booked in advance. These hikes are challenging and take 1 to 2 hours, but they offer breathtaking panoramic views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding area. As permits are limited, it’s important to secure your spot well ahead of time.
It is not recommended to buy tickets at the entrance of Machu Picchu due to limited availability and high demand, especially during peak season. Most tickets are sold in advance, so it’s crucial to secure your entrance and train tickets ahead of time. Buying tickets online or through authorized agencies will guarantee your place at the site.
To avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit Machu Picchu as early as possible, as the first visitors tend to have a quieter experience with fewer people around. You can also visit during the low season, which is from April to May or September to October, when there are fewer tourists. Another option is to go in the late afternoon, as most large groups visit in the morning, giving you a more peaceful experience.
The train journey to Machu Picchu is a unique experience, offering stunning views of the Andean landscape. To make the most of the trip, be sure to book your tickets in advance and choose a service that fits your comfort and preference for views. Some trains offer panoramic windows, while others provide additional onboard services, such as snacks and entertainment. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the beautiful scenery along the way.
