Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night. We recommend the use of a duffel bag or backpack, whichever is easiest for you to carry. A good size daypack is also essential.
What is the “Slow Inca Trail” and how is it different from the classic version?
The Slow Inca Trail is a gentler, 5-day trek version of the traditional 4-day route, designed to reduce daily hiking time, allow better acclimatization, and provide a more relaxed, immersive experience.
What does the 5-day itinerary include?
It includes guided tours in Lima and Cusco, acclimatization time in the Sacred Valley, a 4-day guided trek on the Inca Trail, one overnight near Machu Picchu, and a full guided visit to the citadel.
Is this tour suitable for beginners or older travelers?
Yes. The slower pace and additional rest stops make it ideal for those with moderate fitness, older travelers, and people new to high-altitude hiking.
What’s included in the package?
Airport transfers, accommodation in Lima and Cusco, all meals during the trek, camping gear, entrance fees (Inca Trail & Machu Picchu), professional guide, porters, and domestic flights.
Are international flights included?
No. International airfare to and from Peru is not included in the package.
How high is the Inca Trail, and will I experience altitude sickness?
The trail reaches a maximum altitude of 4,215m (13,828 ft). Altitude sickness is possible, which is why the itinerary includes extra time in Cusco and the Sacred Valley for acclimatization.
How many hours of hiking are done each day?
Typically 4–6 hours per day, with more time for rest, cultural stops, and acclimatization than on the classic version.
What level of fitness is required?
A moderate fitness level is recommended. Daily walks at altitude can be challenging, but the slower pace and support from guides and porters help ease the journey.
What kind of accommodation is provided during the trek?
Tented campsites with quality camping gear are used on the trail. A hotel stay near Machu Picchu is usually included on the final night before visiting the ruins.
Are meals provided during the trek?
Yes. All meals during the trek (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks) are prepared fresh daily by trekking chefs.
Is a guide included?
Yes. A licensed, English-speaking guide will accompany you throughout the trek and during city tours.
What is the group size?
Group sizes are typically small, ranging from 2 to 12 people, allowing for a more personalized experience.
Do I need permits for the Inca Trail?
Yes. Permits are required and are included in the package, but they are limited, so booking several months in advance is necessary.
How far in advance should I book this tour?
At least 4–6 months in advance, especially for high season (May to September), as permits for the Inca Trail are limited and sell out quickly.
What should I pack for the trek?
Essential items include good hiking boots, layered clothing, a rain jacket, sun protection, insect repellent, a sleeping bag (can often be rented), and a daypack.
Will porters carry my gear?
Yes. Porters carry all camping equipment and most of your belongings. You’re only responsible for your daypack (camera, water, jacket, etc.).
Are there restrooms or showers on the trail?
Basic toilets are available at most campsites. Showers are rare; some locations may offer cold or basic facilities.
Is drinking water provided?
Yes. Boiled and filtered water is provided daily during the trek for refilling water bottles.
What’s the weather like during the trek?
Dry season (May–September) is ideal, with cool nights and sunny days. Rainy season (November–March) brings warmer temps and more frequent showers.
Is this tour customizable?
Yes. Most operators allow you to add extra days in Lima, Cusco, or extend to destinations like Lake Titicaca or the Amazon.
