Inca Trail Challenge 3 days overview (KM 82 to Machu Picchu via Sun Gate)

The 3-day Inca Trail Challenge is a condensed, intense version of the iconic trek, ideal for adventurous spirits ready to push limits. It begins at KM 82 (Piscacucho), tracing the ancient paths once walked by the Incas. On Day 1, hikers cover a long stretch through the Urubamba River valley, passing archaeological sites like Llactapata, gradually ascending to camp near Llulluchapampa or Pacaymayu. Day 2 is the most physically demanding: crossing the high mountain pass Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman’s Pass, 4,215 m), then descending into the cloud forest. You pass Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, and lush landscapes that shift from puna to jungle, with breathtaking vistas and steep stone stairways. Day 3, pre-dawn, the trail leads to Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), the ceremonial entrance to Machu Picchu, revealing the Lost City in all its sunrise glory. After days of effort, it’s an emotional reward: mist lifting over ancient stones, surrounded by mountains and history.
