Altitude & Acclimatization
The Cordillera Blanca is a high-altitude mountain region, and proper acclimatization is essential for an enjoyable trekking experience.
This itinerary includes additional time in the Huaraz region to help your body gradually adjust to the altitude before beginning the more demanding sections of the Santa Cruz Trek.
Although the itinerary is designed to support acclimatization, we recommend arriving in Huaraz in good physical condition, staying well hydrated, and allowing additional time before the trek whenever possible.
Important Notice
Weather conditions in the Cordillera Blanca can change quickly. Rain, strong winds, cold temperatures, or trail conditions may occasionally require adjustments to the itinerary or campsite locations.
Any necessary changes will always be made with the safety and well-being of our travelers as the highest priority.

Your 7-day Santa Cruz Trek adventure begins with a warm welcome in the Huaraz region. Our team will meet you upon arrival at Anta Huaraz Airport, approximately a 15-minute drive away, or at the Huaraz bus station, followed by a scenic journey toward Carhuaz.
As we leave the city behind, the road gradually winds into the foothills of the magnificent Cordillera Blanca, passing through small Andean communities, green farmland, and peaceful mountain landscapes. After approximately 1–2 hours of travel, we arrive at Fleur Lodge in Accopampa, Carhuaz, located between 2,688 and 2,773 m (8,819–9,097 ft).
Upon arrival, settle into your comfortable double room and take some time to relax after your journey. The afternoon is intentionally kept free so your body can begin adjusting naturally to the altitude.
You may take a gentle walk through the lodge’s Bio Chakra organic garden, enjoy a warm cup of coca tea on the terrace, or simply relax and take in the surrounding mountain views. There is no need to rush—this first day is all about resting, hydrating, and preparing for the adventure ahead.
In the evening, enjoy a relaxed dinner at the lodge before a good night’s sleep. We recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day, as staying well hydrated is an important part of preparing for high-altitude trekking.
After breakfast at the lodge, we depart at approximately 6:00 a.m. in private transportation and begin our journey toward one of the most spectacular destinations in the Cordillera Blanca: Laguna 69.
We travel north through Yungay before entering the beautiful Llanganuco Valley, surrounded by impressive snow-capped mountains. Along the way, we make a short stop at Chinancocha (Llanganuco Lake), a striking turquoise lagoon located at approximately 3,800 m (12,467 ft), with the imposing peaks of Huascarán and Huandoy rising above the valley.
After approximately two hours of driving, we arrive at Cebollapampa, located at around 3,900 m (12,795 ft), where our hike begins.
The trail starts gradually, winding through native vegetation and beautiful quenual forests. After roughly 50 minutes, the landscape opens into a broad mountain valley, and the trail gradually becomes steeper.
We continue climbing along a series of well-defined switchbacks for about an hour. As we gain altitude, the views become increasingly impressive, revealing more of the surrounding peaks and high-Andean landscape. After reaching a small intermediate lagoon, we cross a relatively gentle section before tackling the final ascent.
The last section is the most demanding, with approximately 200 meters of elevation gain over one kilometer. After the climb, the landscape suddenly opens before you, revealing the breathtaking Laguna 69.
Set within a dramatic natural amphitheater, the lake is renowned for its intense turquoise-blue waters, fed by the surrounding glaciers. Above it rise the impressive peaks of Chacraraju, Nevado Pisco, Huascarán, and Yanapaccha, creating an unforgettable mountain panorama.
Take time to rest beside the lake, enjoy your box lunch, and capture photographs of this extraordinary landscape. Once you have had time to appreciate the scenery, we begin our descent along the same trail back to Cebollapampa.
Our private transportation will be waiting to take us back to Fleur Lodge, where you can enjoy a hot shower and a well-deserved dinner.
Pre-Trek Briefing
In the evening, your guide will conduct an important pre-trek briefing before the Santa Cruz Trek begins. We will review the itinerary for the following days, discuss altitude and safety recommendations, check essential equipment, go over packing requirements, and answer any final questions you may have.
This briefing is also an opportunity to meet with the trekking team and make sure everyone is fully prepared for the adventure ahead.
After an early breakfast, we leave Fleur Lodge by private transportation and begin our journey deeper into the spectacular Cordillera Blanca.
As the road climbs toward the Llanganuco viewpoint, the mountains gradually come into view. If weather and timing are favorable, we may be treated to an unforgettable Andean sunrise, with the first rays of light illuminating the majestic summits of Huascarán (6,768 m), Huandoy (6,395 m), Pisco (5,752 m), and Chopicalqui (6,354 m).
We continue toward the impressive Portachuelo de Llanganuco Pass, reaching approximately 4,750 m (15,583 ft). This is the highest point of the day, reached by vehicle. From the pass, the road descends toward Vaquería, situated at approximately 3,750 m (12,303 ft), where we leave the vehicle behind and begin our trek.
The trail gradually descends into the beautiful Huaripampa Valley, passing small farms and traditional Andean communities where local families continue to cultivate their land and care for their livestock. The peaceful surroundings offer a wonderful opportunity to experience a more authentic side of life in the Peruvian Andes.
As we walk deeper into the valley, the landscape becomes increasingly impressive. Green mountain vegetation contrasts with the dramatic, snow-covered peaks of Chacraraju (6,112 m) and Taulliraju (5,830 m), which dominate the skyline.
We maintain a comfortable and steady pace, allowing plenty of time to appreciate the scenery, take photographs, and enjoy the tranquility of the mountains.
By mid-afternoon, we arrive at our campsite in the Paria Valley, at approximately 3,875 m (12,713 ft). Our tents will already be prepared, allowing you to settle in and relax after the day’s hike.
As evening arrives, enjoy a selection of hot drinks followed by a hearty dinner prepared by our trekking chef. When the skies are clear, the remote location offers an incredible opportunity to admire the stars above the Cordillera Blanca before getting a good night’s rest.
Wake up to the peaceful surroundings of the high Andes as our team brings hot coffee or tea to your tent. After a nourishing breakfast, we prepare for the most challenging and rewarding day of the Santa Cruz Trek.
Today’s goal is Punta Unión Pass, the highest point of the trek at approximately 4,750 m (15,583 ft). The ascent is gradual but demanding, taking us deeper into the spectacular alpine landscapes of the Cordillera Blanca.
As we climb higher, the scenery changes dramatically. The valley becomes more rugged, glaciers appear closer, and enormous snow-covered peaks rise above the trail. The striking Taulliraju gradually dominates the horizon, creating an incredible backdrop as we approach the pass.
After several hours of steady hiking, we reach Punta Unión Pass. Standing at the top, you’ll have a spectacular sense of achievement and some of the most impressive views of the entire trek. Looking across the mountains, you can see the dramatic Santa Cruz Valley, glacial landscapes, turquoise lagoons, and imposing peaks including Quitaraju, Artesonraju, and Taulliraju.
We take time at the pass to rest, enjoy the scenery, and capture photographs before beginning our descent. The trail leads down through rocky terrain and open alpine landscapes, gradually bringing us into the beautiful Santa Cruz Valley.
The descent continues toward Taullipampa, where we reach our campsite at approximately 4,180 m (13,713 ft). The campsite is surrounded by towering mountains and offers an impressive setting to relax after this demanding day.
Once you arrive, our team will have camp ready for you. Enjoy a warm drink, a freshly prepared dinner, and some well-deserved time to rest. On a clear evening, the remote location provides an excellent opportunity to look up at the stars and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the Cordillera Blanca.
Tomorrow, we continue deeper into the Santa Cruz Valley, with more spectacular lakes and mountain scenery awaiting us.
Start the morning with a warm cup of coffee or tea delivered to your tent, followed by breakfast before continuing our journey through the spectacular Santa Cruz Valley.
Today’s hike follows a more gradual section of the trail as we descend from Taullipampa. The path winds alongside the Santa Cruz River, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery that changes with every turn. Along the way, we pass the entrance to the Carhuacocha Valley, while the surrounding peaks reveal new perspectives as the changing light moves across their slopes.
As we continue, the character of the landscape gradually changes. The wide valley becomes narrower, the vegetation becomes greener and more marsh-like, and steep rocky mountains rise on both sides of the trail. The combination of rivers, meadows, cliffs, and snow-capped peaks creates a beautiful contrast throughout the day’s hike.
One of the main highlights comes around midday when we make a short ascent to the Alpamayo viewpoint. From here, we are rewarded with an impressive perspective of Alpamayo, renowned for its elegant pyramid-shaped profile and striking ice-covered slopes.
We take some time at the viewpoint to appreciate the scenery and capture photographs before continuing our descent. From here, the trail gradually enters a narrower section of the valley, with towering rock walls becoming increasingly prominent as we lose altitude.
By late afternoon, we arrive at Llamacorral, our campsite at approximately 3,783 m (12,411 ft). After a rewarding day on the trail, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings while our team prepares a hearty dinner.
With the mountains still rising dramatically around the campsite, Llamacorral provides a beautiful setting to spend another night in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca.
Wake up to your final morning in the mountains and enjoy a warm cup of coffee or tea delivered to your tent before breakfast.
Today marks the final hiking day of your Santa Cruz Trek. The trail gradually descends through the lower Santa Cruz Valley, and with every step, the landscape begins to change. The vegetation becomes greener, the temperatures warmer, and the high-altitude environment slowly gives way to the lower valleys.
The trail is well defined and relatively gentle, allowing you to enjoy the scenery at a comfortable pace. As you descend, take a moment to look back at the spectacular mountain peaks and valleys that have accompanied you throughout the trek.
After approximately four hours of hiking, we arrive at Cashapampa, situated at 2,944 m / 9,658 ft. This small Andean village marks the end of the Santa Cruz Trek.
Our private vehicle will be waiting for us here. We say goodbye to our trekking team, including our guides, chef, and horsemen, who have supported you throughout this unforgettable journey.
From Cashapampa, we begin a scenic drive back toward Fleur Lodge in Carhuaz, taking approximately three hours. Along the way, enjoy the changing landscapes as we leave the high mountains behind.
Upon arrival at the lodge, it is time to relax and enjoy some well-earned comfort. Take a hot shower, change into fresh clothes, and settle into a comfortable bed after several days in the mountains.
In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner and celebrate the completion of your Santa Cruz Trek — a remarkable journey through the spectacular landscapes of the Cordillera Blanca.
After breakfast at the lodge, your Santa Cruz Trek adventure officially comes to an end. At the scheduled time, our private transportation will transfer you to Anta Huaraz Airport or the Huaraz bus station, depending on your onward travel arrangements.
If you are flying, please keep in mind that flight schedules between Lima and Huaraz are limited, with only one or two flights generally operating per day. If you are traveling by bus, most overnight services depart Huaraz at approximately 9:00 p.m., with buses arriving from Lima around 6:00 a.m.
Before saying goodbye, take a final moment to appreciate the landscapes and experiences you have shared throughout your journey. From turquoise glacial lakes and remote Andean valleys to high mountain passes and spectacular snow-capped peaks, the Cordillera Blanca offers an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
We hope your time with us has been comfortable, rewarding, and truly memorable, and that the mountains of Peru will remain a special part of your travel memories.

Important Travel Conditions
The Santa Cruz Trek takes place in a remote, high-altitude environment where weather, trail conditions, and local circumstances can change quickly. While we carefully plan and monitor every departure, certain situations beyond our control may require adjustments to the itinerary.
These may include severe weather, heavy snowfall, landslides, road closures, trail restrictions, health or safety emergencies, government regulations, strikes, natural events, or other circumstances considered force majeure.
Our team will make every reasonable effort to follow the original itinerary whenever conditions safely allow. However, the safety of our travelers and trekking staff will always take precedence over the planned schedule. Your guide may therefore modify the route, timetable, campsites, transportation, or activities when necessary.
Any additional costs arising from unforeseen circumstances, emergency transportation, itinerary modifications, extended stays, or services requested outside the original program may be charged to the traveler.
We greatly appreciate your understanding and flexibility. Traveling through the remote Andes is a unique experience, and being prepared for changing conditions is an important part of a safe and enjoyable trek.
Travel Insurance
We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before beginning your Santa Cruz Trek.
Your policy should ideally include coverage for:

Additional Information
Pre-Trek Briefing
A mandatory pre-trek briefing will be conducted with your professional guide before the trek begins. During this meeting, your guide will review the route, daily schedule, altitude, expected weather conditions, safety recommendations, packing requirements, and any important logistical details.
This is also the ideal time to ask questions and make sure you are fully prepared for the trek.
Altitude Acclimatization
For your safety and comfort, we strongly recommend arriving in Huaraz at least two days before starting the trek. Allowing sufficient time for acclimatization can help your body adjust gradually to the altitude.
This is particularly important because the Santa Cruz Trek reaches approximately 4,750 m / 15,584 ft at Punta Unión Pass.
Luggage Storage
You may leave excess luggage at your hotel in Huaraz if the property provides luggage storage.
If your accommodation does not offer this service, we can arrange secure luggage storage at no additional cost. Please inform our team during the pre-trek briefing so we can coordinate the storage arrangements.

Book with confidence and discover the spectacular Cordillera Blanca with a trusted local team committed to providing a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable 7-day Santa Cruz Trek experience.
The Santa Cruz Trek takes you through the spectacular high-altitude landscapes of the Cordillera Blanca, where weather conditions can change quickly throughout the day. You may experience strong sunshine, wind, rain, and cold temperatures, particularly at higher elevations and during the nights.
Because this is a 7-day trek, packing efficiently is especially important. We recommend bringing only what you truly need and organizing your belongings so that essential items are easily accessible.
For your daily hiking needs, we recommend a comfortable 20–30 liter daypack. Depending on the service booked, your larger personal luggage can be transported with the trekking support team, allowing you to hike with a lighter backpack.
To help you stay comfortable, prepared, and safe throughout the trek, we recommend bringing the following:
Important Documents
Clothing
We strongly recommend using a layering system, as temperatures can vary considerably between the valleys and high mountain passes.
Footwear
Camping & Sleeping Gear
Sleeping bags and trekking poles are available for rent from us if required.
Sun & Weather Protection
The sun can be particularly strong at high altitude, even when temperatures feel cool.
Keep toiletries to a minimum to avoid unnecessary weight.
Important: If you take prescription medication, bring enough for the entire trip, plus a small additional supply in case of unexpected delays.
Recommended Extras
These items are optional but can make your trek more enjoyable:
What Not to Bring
Avoid carrying unnecessary or bulky items. The Santa Cruz Trek includes several long hiking days at high altitude, and a heavy backpack can make the experience considerably more demanding.
Since the itinerary includes several nights of mountain camping, make sure your warm clothing and sleeping gear are appropriate for cold nighttime temperatures.
Our Recommendation: Acclimatize Before the Trek
For a more comfortable and enjoyable experience, we strongly recommend arriving in Huaraz at least two days before the trek. Proper acclimatization gives your body time to adjust gradually to the altitude before reaching the higher sections of the Santa Cruz route.
The trek reaches approximately 4,750 m / 15,584 ft at Punta Unión Pass, so acclimatization, hydration, proper nutrition, and a well-organized lightweight backpack are essential.
Pack smart, stay hydrated, acclimatize properly, and enjoy the journey through the spectacular Cordillera Blanca.
The Santa Cruz Trek is considered moderate to challenging because of the high altitude, long hiking days, and the ascent to Punta Unión Pass at approximately 4,750 m / 15,584 ft. The 7-day itinerary provides a more gradual experience, including an acclimatization day and the Laguna 69 hike before starting the main trek.
Previous high-altitude trekking experience is helpful but not essential. Travelers with a good level of fitness who are properly acclimatized can complete the trek. Regular hiking or cardiovascular training before your trip is highly recommended.
The highest point of the trek is Punta Unión Pass at approximately 4,750 m / 15,584 ft. Because of the elevation, proper acclimatization is one of the most important factors for a safe and enjoyable experience.
We strongly recommend arriving in Huaraz at least two days before the trek. Our 7-day itinerary also includes an acclimatization day with the hike to Laguna 69, helping you gradually prepare for the higher elevations of the Santa Cruz route.
Yes. Laguna 69 is included in the itinerary as an acclimatization hike before beginning the main Santa Cruz Trek. The lake is one of the most spectacular attractions in the Cordillera Blanca, famous for its intense turquoise waters and dramatic mountain surroundings.
Daily distances vary depending on the section of the route. Most trekking days involve approximately 10–15 km of hiking, with walking times generally ranging from 4 to 8 hours. Your guide will maintain a comfortable pace with regular breaks.
The exact distance can vary slightly depending on trail conditions and route adjustments. The Santa Cruz section is approximately 50 km, in addition to the Laguna 69 acclimatization hike.
The generally recommended season is from April through October, when conditions are typically drier and visibility is often better. However, mountain weather can change at any time, and conditions should always be considered before departure.
Yes, departures can operate during the rainy season, but conditions may be wetter and more unpredictable. Rain, snow, mud, and cloud cover are possible. Our guides continuously assess trail and weather conditions and may adjust the itinerary when necessary for safety.
The 7-day itinerary includes accommodation at Fleur Lodge in Carhuaz before and after the main trekking section, along with mountain camping during the Santa Cruz Trek. Quality tents and camping equipment are provided as part of the service.
The program includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner as specified in the itinerary. Our trekking cook prepares fresh, nutritious meals designed to provide the energy needed for long days of hiking. Vegetarian and other dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.
No. You only need to carry your essential personal items in your daypack. Depending on the service booked, trekking support staff and pack animals can transport camping equipment, food, and permitted personal luggage.
We recommend a comfortable 20–30 liter daypack for your daily essentials. Your daypack should contain items such as water, snacks, sunscreen, rain protection, warm layers, personal medication, and your camera.
Yes. We offer equipment rentals for travelers who do not wish to bring these items from home.
Please request rental equipment in advance so we can confirm availability.
The trek is operated with safety as a priority. Our professional local guides monitor weather, trail conditions, altitude, and the physical condition of the group throughout the journey. If conditions become unsafe, the itinerary may be modified when necessary.
Essential items include your passport, appropriate hiking boots, warm layers, waterproof clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, gloves, water bottle or hydration bladder, personal medication, headlamp, sleeping bag, and a 20–30 liter daypack. Because temperatures can change rapidly, we recommend dressing in layers.
Yes, but acclimatization is essential. The trek reaches nearly 4,750 m, so travelers should spend sufficient time in Huaraz before starting. Being physically fit does not necessarily mean your body is already acclimatized to high altitude.
Mountain conditions can change rapidly. In the event of severe weather, snowfall, landslides, road closures, trail restrictions, strikes, or other circumstances beyond our control, your guide may modify the route or schedule. Traveler safety always takes priority over the original itinerary.
Yes. Our recommended minimum is 2 travelers, and once your departure is confirmed, we operate the trek as scheduled. We do not cancel confirmed departures simply because the group is small.
We also never transfer our passengers to another tour operator or combine them with another agency’s group. Your trek is organized and operated by our own professional team.
To reserve your trek, simply provide your booking information and complete the required 30% deposit. The remaining balance can be paid upon arrival in Huaraz before the trek begins.
Once your reservation is confirmed, our team will provide the necessary information regarding transportation, accommodation, preparation, packing, and the pre-trek briefing.
Book with confidence and get ready to explore Laguna 69, Punta Unión, Alpamayo, Santa Cruz Valley, and the spectacular landscapes of the Cordillera Blanca.

10/10 Experience - Would Recommend! We had an amazing time on the Salkantay 5 Day Trek. Before the trip started, Quechuas had great communication and was very accommodating to our travel schedule, including adjusting our briefing time with our guide. The skydome accomodations were great (all fairly spacious, with exception of night 2, which was fine as we didn’t spend much time there), the food was delicious (a great variety and always more than enough to go around) and the trek itself was beautiful. Our guide Steven, as well as second guide Jorge, were very patient, knowledgeable and kind to us and the others in our group - not only did we get to see incredible scenery but we also learned a lot about the local landscape and culture. We rented sleeping bags, which we would highly recommend. We brought our own hiking poles but would recommend renting if you don’t bring your own.Overall, an amazing experience and we would highly recommend this company.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Seamless and Supportive Inca Trail Experience – Highly Recommend We recently completed the 4-day Classic Inca Trail trek with Quechuas Expeditions in June 2025, and overall had a fantastic experience that struck the perfect balance between physical challenge and logistical ease. Our guide, Fernando (“Nando”), was outstanding—passionate, deeply knowledgeable about the trail’s rich history, and highly supportive throughout. He kept our group motivated and informed, and managed different paces and needs with professionalism and care. His English was great, and he always made time to answer questions or share interesting stories along the way.The porter and chef team were phenomenal. Every meal was different, delicious, and plentiful—we were never hungry, and dietary needs (including vegan and vegetarian) were handled without issue. They even baked a custom cake on the trail for a couple’s anniversary, which speaks volumes about their care and capability. The porters themselves were friendly, warm, and constantly going above and beyond to support us.Quechuas provided tents, sleeping bags, a toilet tent, and hot water for face washing each morning, plus coca tea as a wake-up touch. The duffel service was useful, though we did find the weight limits a bit tighter than expected once you factor in the sleeping bag. In the end, we paid for an extra porter—which was easy to arrange but worth noting for those planning their packing. One thing we didn’t know in advance: the porter bags aren’t waterproof, so future trekkers may want to use dry bags or line the inside with plastic.Another small consideration: due to how campsites are assigned (by the government, not the tour company), some days ended up being longer than the traditional day-by-day breakdown you might read online. While not Quechuas’ fault, for myself, as much heads-up as possible would’ve helped with my own mental preparation. All said, Quechuas Expeditions delivered where it mattered most. The logistics were smooth, the staff was superb, and their support allowed us to focus on enjoying the trail and the breathtaking views without worrying about the rest. This is a company that knows what it’s doing.Would I recommend them? Absolutely—whether you’re a first-time trekker or experienced hiker, they make an unforgettable journey that much more seamless and enjoyable. If I ever do this again, I would book with them without question, and if possible, request the exact same team. Thank you Fernando and team for a trip of a lifetime and memories that will stay with me forever 🙏Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Amazing trip on the Inca Trail with Quechuas Expeditions I never imagined that the Inca Trail could be so transformative. My partner and I decided to do the classic 4-day trek with Quechuas Expeditions and, honestly, it exceeded all our expectations. From the very first moment we felt very welcome. The service was impeccable, they were always attentive to our needs, solving all our doubts before and during the trek. The hike was not easy, but the views, the fresh mountain air and the energy of the group kept us going without thinking about how tiring it was. The meals at the campsites surprised us pleasantly, we really did not expect so much variety and flavor in the middle of the mountain. And the end, reaching Machu Picchu through the sun gate (Inti Punku) was simply magical, there are no words to describe that moment. It is definitely a unique experience that connects you with the history, culture and nature of Peru. Thank you Quechuas Expeditions for making this trip so special!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Hardest challenge of my life but worth it One of the hardest things I have ever done (definitely underestimate the difficulty level), and I don’t know if I would have made it if it wasn’t for our awesome guide Frenando and all the amazing staff we had. What a fantastic group of people. The porters are so hard working, it’s so humbling. The chef Taco was fantastic! I am vegan and he made me the most amazing food the entire time. I couldn’t believe it. And then our guide Fernando topped it all. Knowledgeable, professional yet fun, very personable, very patient (we were slow!) and very encouraging. If you are considering taking on this challenge, I highly recommend Quechua’s Expeditions and if you can request Fernando. E sure to do so. He’s been doing this for 19yrs!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Hike of a lifetime! We had the most amazing time! The different sceneries along the trek are just unbelievable and although being two fairly unfit persons we could enjoy it all the way. Fernando and Steven are terrific guides making sure we were all comfortable and happy at all times. The food and accommodations along the way were also a lot more luxurious than what we’d expected. Would 100% recommend this to anyone who’s up for a hike!!
