Ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts, this journey showcases the extraordinary beauty and ecological importance of southeastern Peru.
Please note that the itinerary is subject to change due to weather conditions, river levels, wildlife activity, transportation schedules, and other operational factors beyond our control.
Our adventure to Manu National Park begins early in the morning with departure from Cusco. Along the route, we stop at the enigmatic Ninamarca Chullpas, ancient pre-Inca funerary towers located amid impressive Andean scenery, offering a first glimpse into the region’s rich ancestral heritage.
We continue to the traditional colonial town of Paucartambo, where you will have time to appreciate its history, cultural identity, and well-preserved architecture that reflects its colonial past. From there, we ascend to Acjanaco Pass, the official entrance to Manu National Park.
At this point, we descend into the cloud forest, a transition zone between the Andes and the Amazon. Along the way, we make several stops to observe the extraordinary biodiversity of the area, including colorful birds, orchids, bromeliads, and towering giant ferns. One of the highlights is the chance to witness the Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruviana) performing its distinctive courtship display near the San Pedro area.
As we move deeper into the forest, the environment becomes increasingly humid and vibrant, signaling our entry into one of the most biologically rich ecosystems on Earth. In the late afternoon, we arrive at Bambu Lodge, our first accommodation, where you will enjoy a freshly prepared dinner. Later, your guide will provide a briefing about the next day’s journey, along with safety recommendations and insights into the Amazon ecosystem.
This section of the trip marks the dramatic shift from high Andean landscapes into the heart of the cloud forest, setting the tone for the immersive Amazon experience ahead.
Morning – Transfer to Atalaya & River Journey
After an early breakfast at Bambu Lodge, we set out on a scenic one-hour drive to Atalaya Port (500 m / 1,640 ft). En route, there is an optional stop at a wildlife rescue center, where visitors may observe rescued animals undergoing rehabilitation and learn about local conservation efforts.
From Atalaya, we board a motorized boat and begin a 40-minute navigation along the Alto Madre de Dios River. This marks our deeper entry into the Amazon rainforest, where the landscape becomes increasingly dense and vibrant.
Midday – Machuwasi Lake & Hot Springs Experience
We continue with a guided 45-minute jungle walk toward the peaceful Machuwasi Lake, a rich ecosystem surrounded by rainforest. Along the trail, there are good chances to observe monkeys, tropical birds, and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
At the lake, we explore its calm waters aboard traditional catamarans, quietly observing unique species such as the Hoatzin (a prehistoric-looking bird) and the Capybara, the world’s largest rodent. The stillness of the lake offers an intimate wildlife-viewing experience.
Afterward, we continue by boat for approximately 1.5 hours to the Shintuya community, where a freshly prepared lunch is served. Following this, you will have time to relax in the natural Aguas Calientes hot springs, surrounded by dense rainforest and soothing jungle sounds.
Afternoon to Evening – Arrival at Dorado Lodge & Night Walk
In the afternoon, we continue our river journey with a two-hour boat ride to Dorado Lodge, located deep within the jungle. After check-in and dinner, we head out for an optional guided night walk.
This nocturnal experience reveals a completely different side of the rainforest, where we may encounter tarantulas, frogs, snakes, and nocturnal monkeys. We also explore areas near a mammal clay lick, where, with luck, species such as tapirs or wild pigs may appear under the cover of darkness.
This day offers a full immersion into Amazon biodiversity, combining river navigation, wildlife observation, and unique night exploration experiences.
Early Morning – Entry to the Manu Reserved Zone
The day begins with the powerful sound of howler monkeys resonating through the rainforest at dawn. After an early breakfast, we embark on a two-hour boat ride toward the Limonal Control Point, the official gateway to the Manu Reserved Zone within Manu National Park.
Once the registration procedures are completed, we continue deeper into one of the most strictly protected and biodiverse areas of the Amazon. From this point onward, human presence becomes minimal, allowing wildlife to flourish in its natural state. Along the riverbanks—known as prime wildlife corridors—there is a possibility, if fortune allows, of spotting the elusive jaguar (Panthera onca), one of the most emblematic predators of the rainforest.
Midday – Otorongo Lake & Canopy Tower Experience
We proceed with a scenic 4 to 5-hour navigation through pristine Amazon landscapes, where sightings of wildlife along the riverbanks are common. Keep an eye out for black caimans basking on the shores and sloths resting high in the canopy.
Upon arrival at Otorongo Lake, we ascend a 20-meter observation tower that rises above the forest canopy. From this elevated platform, we enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and search for iconic species such as the endangered giant river otter and various freshwater turtles inhabiting the lake.
Afternoon to Evening – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
In the afternoon, we continue with a short 45-minute boat journey to Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, our accommodation for the next two nights. This eco-lodge is located deep within the Reserved Zone and is operated in cooperation with the Indigenous Matsiguenka community, offering an authentic and sustainable Amazon experience.
After settling in and enjoying dinner, you may join an optional guided night walk. This evening excursion reveals the hidden life of the rainforest after dark, with opportunities to observe amphibians, bats, nocturnal insects, and other creatures that thrive in the Amazon’s nighttime ecosystem.
This stage of the journey offers one of the most immersive experiences in the Amazon, combining untouched wilderness, rare wildlife encounters, and cultural connection with local communities.
Salvador Lake & Wildlife Observation
At dawn, we depart on a short 20-minute boat ride toward Salvador Lake, as the rainforest slowly comes alive with the sounds of birds, insects, and distant animal calls. Upon arrival, we board a traditional catamaran and silently glide across the mirror-like waters, maximizing opportunities for undisturbed wildlife viewing.
This calm ecosystem provides an excellent chance to observe some of the Amazon’s most iconic species, including the endangered Giant River Otter, as well as the elusive Green Anaconda and various species of freshwater turtles resting along the lake’s edges.
Mid-Morning – Macaw Clay Lick Experience
We return to the lodge for breakfast before continuing with a 30-minute guided walk through primary rainforest to reach a vibrant macaw clay lick. This natural phenomenon is one of the Amazon’s most impressive wildlife spectacles, where dozens of macaws and parrots gather to feed on mineral-rich clay essential for their digestion.
Watch as Scarlet Macaws, Blue-and-yellow Macaws, and other parrot species fill the sky with vivid colors and powerful calls, creating an unforgettable sensory experience in the heart of the jungle.
Afternoon – Matsiguenka Culture & Primate Exploration
After lunch at the lodge, you will have the opportunity to participate in cultural activities guided by members of the Matsiguenka Indigenous community. This experience offers insight into traditional Amazonian knowledge, including survival techniques and the chance to practice ancestral archery skills used for generations.
Later, we cross the river for a guided jungle hike through trails known for high primate activity. This excursion offers excellent opportunities to observe species such as Spider Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys, and Howler Monkeys moving actively through the canopy.
Evening – Final Night in the Jungle
We return to the lodge for dinner and share the final evening in the deep Amazon. For those interested, an optional night walk is available, offering one last chance to explore the rainforest after dark and observe nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, insects, and other hidden creatures of the jungle.
This day combines wildlife richness, cultural immersion, and immersive rainforest exploration, offering one of the most complete Amazon experiences of the journey.
After an early breakfast at Casa Matsiguenka, we continue our journey by boat through the vast and powerful Manu and Madre de Dios river systems, surrounded by untouched rainforest and extraordinary biodiversity. Along the way, the scenery becomes increasingly remote, offering continuous opportunities to observe wildlife along the riverbanks, including birds, reptiles, and occasionally larger mammals hidden within the dense vegetation.
We proceed toward Blanquillo, a key area known for its proximity to one of the most impressive macaw clay licks in the region. Upon arrival at the lodge, we settle into our accommodation located near this remarkable natural attraction, where vibrant flocks of macaws and parrots gather daily to feed on mineral-rich clay.
In the afternoon, we explore the surrounding forest trails on guided walks, allowing us to better understand the ecosystem and observe the rich variety of flora and fauna that thrive in this part of the Amazon. The area is especially known for its high bird diversity and frequent mammal activity, making it an excellent location for wildlife observation and photography.
As evening approaches, we return to the lodge to relax and enjoy a freshly prepared dinner. The accommodation offers private bathrooms and comfortable facilities, providing a peaceful rest after a full day of exploration.
This stage of the journey highlights the transition into one of the most wildlife-rich zones of the Amazon, combining river navigation, rainforest trekking, and close encounters with iconic species in their natural habitat.
After a hearty breakfast, we continue our expedition by boat toward the famous Macaw Clay Lick, one of the most spectacular wildlife attractions in the Amazon. From a strategically placed observation platform or traditional catamaran, we witness an extraordinary natural display as hundreds of colorful macaws and parrots gather to feed on mineral-rich clay essential for their diet.
This vibrant gathering is accompanied by a rich variety of rainforest life, including monkeys moving through the treetops, reptiles resting along riverbanks, dwarf caimans, exotic insects, and groups of freshwater turtles. With some luck, it is also possible to spot larger mammals such as the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) and other elusive species that inhabit the surrounding wetlands.
After this unforgettable wildlife experience, we begin our return journey by boat for approximately four hours, navigating through winding Amazonian rivers and observing the changing landscapes of the rainforest one last time from the water.
We then continue by road for around three hours to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the southern Amazon. From there, we take a final one-hour boat transfer to our lodge located within the Tambopata National Reserve.
Upon arrival, we settle into our accommodation surrounded by pristine jungle. After dinner, you may relax at the lodge or enjoy a quiet evening absorbing the sounds of the rainforest—an immersive reminder of the untouched wilderness we have been exploring throughout the journey.
This day combines one of the Amazon’s most iconic wildlife spectacles with a long, scenic transition into the Tambopata ecosystem, marking the beginning of the final stage of the expedition.
On our final day, we set out for an unforgettable exploration of Sandoval Lake within the Tambopata National Reserve. After breakfast, we transfer by boat to the reserve control point, where our journey into the rainforest begins. A packed lunch and snacks are provided to keep you energized throughout the day.
From the entrance, we embark on a guided hike of approximately 1.5 hours through lush primary rainforest. Along the trail, we are surrounded by towering ancient trees, tangled vines, and a vibrant diversity of orchids and tropical flowers. This rich ecosystem is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including Giant River Otters, monkeys, colorful butterflies, turtles, and countless bird and fish species.
Upon reaching Sandoval Lake, we board traditional canoes and spend several hours peacefully navigating its calm waters. This pristine oxbow lake offers one of the best wildlife viewing experiences in the region, with excellent chances to observe Giant Otters, Hoatzins, herons, and other Amazonian species in their natural habitat. The serenity of the lake, combined with its mirrored reflections of the surrounding jungle, creates a truly unforgettable atmosphere.
After exploring the lake, we return by canoe and hike back to the control point, retracing our steps through the rainforest. From there, we take a boat back to Puerto Maldonado.
Finally, our team will assist with your transfer to the airport or bus terminal for your onward journey to Cusco or Lima. Depending on your schedule, you may take a flight or an overnight bus, marking the end of this immersive Amazon expedition.
This final day offers a peaceful yet powerful conclusion to the journey, showcasing the extraordinary biodiversity and tranquil beauty of the Tambopata ecosystem.

Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night. We recommend the use of a duffel bag or backpack, whichever is easiest for you to carry. A good size daypack is also essential.

Posted on Sara DVerified 10/10 Experience - Would Recommend! We had an amazing time on the Salkantay 5 Day Trek. Before the trip started, Quechuas had great communication and was very accommodating to our travel schedule, including adjusting our briefing time with our guide. The skydome accomodations were great (all fairly spacious, with exception of night 2, which was fine as we didn’t spend much time there), the food was delicious (a great variety and always more than enough to go around) and the trek itself was beautiful. Our guide Steven, as well as second guide Jorge, were very patient, knowledgeable and kind to us and the others in our group - not only did we get to see incredible scenery but we also learned a lot about the local landscape and culture. We rented sleeping bags, which we would highly recommend. We brought our own hiking poles but would recommend renting if you don’t bring your own.Overall, an amazing experience and we would highly recommend this company.Posted on Matthew WVerified Seamless and Supportive Inca Trail Experience – Highly Recommend We recently completed the 4-day Classic Inca Trail trek with Quechuas Expeditions in June 2025, and overall had a fantastic experience that struck the perfect balance between physical challenge and logistical ease. Our guide, Fernando (“Nando”), was outstanding—passionate, deeply knowledgeable about the trail’s rich history, and highly supportive throughout. He kept our group motivated and informed, and managed different paces and needs with professionalism and care. His English was great, and he always made time to answer questions or share interesting stories along the way.The porter and chef team were phenomenal. Every meal was different, delicious, and plentiful—we were never hungry, and dietary needs (including vegan and vegetarian) were handled without issue. They even baked a custom cake on the trail for a couple’s anniversary, which speaks volumes about their care and capability. The porters themselves were friendly, warm, and constantly going above and beyond to support us.Quechuas provided tents, sleeping bags, a toilet tent, and hot water for face washing each morning, plus coca tea as a wake-up touch. The duffel service was useful, though we did find the weight limits a bit tighter than expected once you factor in the sleeping bag. In the end, we paid for an extra porter—which was easy to arrange but worth noting for those planning their packing. One thing we didn’t know in advance: the porter bags aren’t waterproof, so future trekkers may want to use dry bags or line the inside with plastic.Another small consideration: due to how campsites are assigned (by the government, not the tour company), some days ended up being longer than the traditional day-by-day breakdown you might read online. While not Quechuas’ fault, for myself, as much heads-up as possible would’ve helped with my own mental preparation. All said, Quechuas Expeditions delivered where it mattered most. The logistics were smooth, the staff was superb, and their support allowed us to focus on enjoying the trail and the breathtaking views without worrying about the rest. This is a company that knows what it’s doing.Would I recommend them? Absolutely—whether you’re a first-time trekker or experienced hiker, they make an unforgettable journey that much more seamless and enjoyable. If I ever do this again, I would book with them without question, and if possible, request the exact same team. Thank you Fernando and team for a trip of a lifetime and memories that will stay with me forever 🙏Posted on Arianna OVerified Amazing trip on the Inca Trail with Quechuas Expeditions I never imagined that the Inca Trail could be so transformative. My partner and I decided to do the classic 4-day trek with Quechuas Expeditions and, honestly, it exceeded all our expectations. From the very first moment we felt very welcome. The service was impeccable, they were always attentive to our needs, solving all our doubts before and during the trek. The hike was not easy, but the views, the fresh mountain air and the energy of the group kept us going without thinking about how tiring it was. The meals at the campsites surprised us pleasantly, we really did not expect so much variety and flavor in the middle of the mountain. And the end, reaching Machu Picchu through the sun gate (Inti Punku) was simply magical, there are no words to describe that moment. It is definitely a unique experience that connects you with the history, culture and nature of Peru. Thank you Quechuas Expeditions for making this trip so special!Posted on naomiammarVerified Hardest challenge of my life but worth it One of the hardest things I have ever done (definitely underestimate the difficulty level), and I don’t know if I would have made it if it wasn’t for our awesome guide Frenando and all the amazing staff we had. What a fantastic group of people. The porters are so hard working, it’s so humbling. The chef Taco was fantastic! I am vegan and he made me the most amazing food the entire time. I couldn’t believe it. And then our guide Fernando topped it all. Knowledgeable, professional yet fun, very personable, very patient (we were slow!) and very encouraging. If you are considering taking on this challenge, I highly recommend Quechua’s Expeditions and if you can request Fernando. E sure to do so. He’s been doing this for 19yrs!Posted on cade cVerified Awesome trek We really enjoyed our trip. It was challenging and also rewarding. Beautiful views and even better food. I can’t rave enough about our cook Santiago! Food was unbelievable. Jose did a fantastic job leading us along the way. He did a good job of explaining what we are seeing! Looking for a physical challenge with beautiful views this is the trek for you.Posted on Lola UVerified Demanding, enriching and unforgettable thanks to the human team I will always be grateful to the rich food and attentions of Santiago, the cook, the professionalism and good advice of José, the guide, the kindness of the helpers, who have made it possible to improve the experience.Posted on Julia C.Verified Amazing trek, amazing guide and staff The Salkantay Trek was absolutely stunning, domes and the views were great with hot water available. What the trek made very special was our guide Nildo. Also, the chef Julian, horseman and second guide were incredible too. Nildo was knowledgeable, caring and passionate about everything he shared. I cannot imagine a better guide :-) Everything was very well organized.Posted on Emelie AVerified Hike of a lifetime! We had the most amazing time! The different sceneries along the trek are just unbelievable and although being two fairly unfit persons we could enjoy it all the way. Fernando and Steven are terrific guides making sure we were all comfortable and happy at all times. The food and accommodations along the way were also a lot more luxurious than what we’d expected. Would 100% recommend this to anyone who’s up for a hike!!
