3 Day Sacred Valley and Short Inca Trail Hike:
The Sacred Valley & Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is an ideal option for travelers seeking a rewarding yet less physically demanding adventure. Unlike the Classic Inca Trail, this route does not require camping or hiking at extreme altitudes, making it accessible for families with children and travelers of all ages.
Your journey begins with a full-day exploration of the Sacred Valley, where you’ll visit traditional markets, stunning Inca archaeological complexes, and breathtaking landscapes. After spending the night in the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo, you’ll embark on the Short Inca Trail. This 12-kilometer (7.4-mile) hike leads through remarkable Inca sites including Chachabamba, the terraced wonder of Wiñay Wayna, and finally Intipunku (Sun Gate), where you’ll be rewarded with your first awe-inspiring view of Machu Picchu. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped Andean peaks and discover diverse flora and fauna native to the cloud forest.
At Quechuas Expeditions, we are a fully licensed, locally owned operator with a dedicated team of professional English-speaking guides. Having walked this trail hundreds of times, our guides bring deep knowledge of Andean history and traditions, as well as first-aid training to ensure your safety and comfort.
Whether traveling solo, as a couple, or in a small group, this tour offers the chance to follow in the footsteps of the Incas and experience one of the world’s most iconic archaeological treasures. While the route is less strenuous than the Classic Inca Trail, we recommend spending 2–3 days in Cusco beforehand to acclimatize. The best time to enjoy this trek is during the dry season, from March to November.
Summary:
Please Note:
Your adventure begins early in the morning as we leave Cusco, watching the city fade into a panorama of snow-capped mountains and patchwork fields. Our first stop is Chinchero, a charming highland village where ancient Inca walls meet colonial architecture. Here, you’ll witness traditional weaving demonstrations and learn the secrets of natural Andean dyes.
We continue to the mysterious circular terraces of Moray, believed to be an agricultural laboratory of the Incas. Standing at the edge, you’ll see perfectly concentric rings descending into the earth — a feat of engineering and science ahead of its time.
Next, the brilliant white salt mines of Maras come into view. Thousands of salt pools shimmer under the sun, fed by a natural spring high in the mountains — a method of salt extraction that has been practiced for centuries.
Our journey then leads to the impressive fortress of Ollantaytambo, where massive stone terraces rise above the town. This living Inca city, with its narrow cobblestone streets and flowing water channels, is a rare example of Inca urban planning still in use today.
In the afternoon, we make our way to Pisac, famous for its colorful handicraft market and hilltop archaeological site. Here, you can browse vibrant stalls filled with textiles, silver, and ceramics, or climb to see the sweeping terraces and ceremonial structures.
As the sun begins to set, we return to Cusco, carrying with us the rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable moments of the Sacred Valley.
Your Short 2 days Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu begins with an early morning transfer from your hotel in Cusco. We will be driving you through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Ollantaytambo. Here we will be boarding the Aguas Calientes-bound train. The 1.5-hour train ride to Km. 104, which marks the trailhead for the Inca Trail, is a picturesque ride. The train snakes through highland villages and farmlands along the course of the Urubamba River. Km 104 is the name given to the trail head after its distance when traveling from Cusco to Machu Picchu. We will be arriving there by 10:00 a.m. Your tour permit, along with the original passport, will be verified here by the local authorities. We will begin the hike by crossing a small bridge with a short uphill hike to a lesser-known yet prominent Inca site, Chachabamba.
Chachabamba:
Chachabamba nestles at 2150 meters above sea level (7053 feet). It is home to a stone altar that the Incas used to worship their supreme God, Inti (Sun) and Apus (the mountain spirit). Using the sacred coca leaves, they used to express their gratitude to Mother Nature and other entities. Locals here continue the practice of following in the footsteps of their ancestors. Our local expert will be demonstrating the process during our visit here.
Wiñay Wayna:
After touring Chachabamba, we will continue with the hike for roughly four hours up the hill to Wiñay Wayna. In Quechua, Wiñay Wayna means forever young. The archaeological site is the most beautiful one on the trail. Wiñay Wayna sits at 2650 meters (8694 ft) above sea level. The complex was built as an administrative center for Machu Picchu. It houses 20 urban areas, farming zones, and ceremonial sites. The most prominent part of the complex is the 7 Window Temple, which was built in honor of the Rainbow. Our local expert will be giving you an immersive tour here. After the tour, we will be stopping at the campsite to unbox our lunch. The campsite is clean and well maintained. You can refill your water bottle here and also use the restrooms before we continue the tour hike to our next stop, Intipunku (Sungate).
Intipunku:
It takes an hour to reach Intipunku from Wiñay Wayna. This section of the trek will take us through a lush tropical jungle. From the Sungate, you will get the first view of Machu Picchu citadel, snuggled between Huayna Picchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain. Only those hiking the Classic Inca Trail and the Short Trail enter the citadel through Sun Gate. We will have a brief stop here so you can contemplate the view. Once you have had your fill of the sight of Machu Picchu, we will be exiting the citadel and taking a bus down to Aguas Calientes town, where we will be accommodating you in a hotel for the night. Aguas Calientes, as the name suggests, is home to hot springs. You can spend the evening soaking in the natural thermal waters. It is the perfect way to relax your muscles after a full-day tour. The town also has plenty of shops where you can possibly shop for souvenirs.
Early in the morning, we will take the tourist bus up to Machu Picchu. Once again, your Machu Picchu tickets will be verified with your original passport. As we enter the citadel, you will witness the golden rays of the rising sun illuminating the walls of Machu Picchu. We will begin the tour with a brief introduction to the Inca civilization. We will visit the main areas of the citadel, such as the main square, cultivation terraces, and more. After the tour, if you have booked to climb Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu mountain, our tour guide will direct you to the respective entrance. Once you have enjoyed Machu Picchu, we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes. Here you will have free time to have lunch or explore the town. In the afternoon, we will take the train back to Ollantaytambo station. Our representative will meet you upon arrival in Ollantaytambo and transfer you to your accommodation in Cusco.

Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but due to the higher altitude of the Andes, the temperature can be quite cold, especially at night. We recommend using a duffel bag or backpack, whichever is easiest for you to carry. A good-sized backpack between 20 and 30 liters is also essential.
List of things you must bring:
Still haven’t decided on the best 2-day Inca Trail tour? We’re sharing frequently asked questions from our satisfied customers who have already visited the trail to Machu Picchu.
The tour is a 2-day trek that takes you through a portion of the famous Inca Trail, allowing you to reach Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate.
The trek covers about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles), usually completed in one full day of hiking, and the second day is spent exploring Machu Picchu.
Is moderate in difficulty, with some uphill and downhill sections but less demanding than the full 4-day trek.
Yes, this trail is suitable for people with a moderate level of fitness and those with basic hiking experience.
No, just like the classic Inca Trail, this tour also requires a licensed guide due to regulations governing the national park.
The best time to hike the trail is during the dry season, from April to October. The rainy season (November to March) can make the trail slippery and challenging.
You should book the trek 3-6 months in advance, especially during peak seasons (June to September), as permits are limited.
While the 2 day Short trail is easier than the full 4-day trek, there’s still an age limit of 12-70 years, though exceptions may apply depending on fitness levels.
Groups usually consist of 8-16 people, though it can vary based on the tour operator.
If you’re in good health and relatively fit, you can hike the Short Inca Trail, but prior hiking experience will make the trek easier.
Some operators offer discounts for children or students, but this depends on the tour provider. Be sure to inquire when booking.
Cancellation policies vary by tour operator, but most have strict policies due to the high demand for permits. You may lose part of your deposit or full payment if you cancel last-minute.
Acclimatize in Cusco for 2-3 days before your trek, drink plenty of water, and consider taking altitude sickness medication.
The highest point of the trail is at 2,730 meters (8,957 feet) at the Sun Gate.
Symptoms include dizziness, headaches, and nausea. If you feel unwell, tell your guide immediately, and they will help you descend to a lower altitude.
Most tour operators provide purified water and ensure that meals are prepared hygienically. Carry water purification tablets just in case.
If you become seriously ill or injured, your guide will arrange for evacuation to Aguas Calientes, where you can take a train back to Cusco.
Essential items include comfortable hiking boots, warm clothing (layers), rain gear, sunscreen, a small daypack, a camera, and personal medications.
No, the 2 days Inca trail typically doesn’t involve camping, so you’ll stay in a hotel in Aguas Calientes on the second night.
A good pair of hiking boots with ankle support is recommended, as the trail has some uneven and rocky terrain.
Yes, you can bring both, but remember that battery life may be limited due to the cold temperatures at higher altitudes.
Wear moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece or jacket, a waterproof jacket for rain, and a hat or sun protection gear.
It’s best to bring your own water and consider carrying water purification tablets or a filter, especially if you’re uncertain about the availability along the trail.
Day 1: Take the train from Ollantaytambo to Kilometer 104, hike to Wiñay Wayna, and camp or continue to Aguas Calientes.
Day 2: Visit Machu Picchu early in the morning for a guided tour and enjoy some free time before returning to Cusco.
The group usually arrives in the morning, around 7:00-8:00 AM, after an early train ride from Aguas Calientes.
Highlights include ancient Inca ruins like Wiñay Wayna, cloud forests, panoramic views of the Andes, and, of course, Machu Picchu itself.
There are toilets at checkpoints and at Machu Picchu, but they can be basic and limited in number.
If you’re interested in climbing either of these peaks, you must purchase a separate permit, as it is not included in the tour.
After visiting Machu Picchu, you’ll take a train back to Ollantaytambo or Aguas Calientes, and then transfer to your hotel in Cusco.

Sara D2025-07-07Verified 10/10 Experience - Would Recommend! We had an amazing time on the Salkantay 5 Day Trek. Before the trip started, Quechuas had great communication and was very accommodating to our travel schedule, including adjusting our briefing time with our guide. The skydome accomodations were great (all fairly spacious, with exception of night 2, which was fine as we didn’t spend much time there), the food was delicious (a great variety and always more than enough to go around) and the trek itself was beautiful. Our guide Steven, as well as second guide Jorge, were very patient, knowledgeable and kind to us and the others in our group - not only did we get to see incredible scenery but we also learned a lot about the local landscape and culture. We rented sleeping bags, which we would highly recommend. We brought our own hiking poles but would recommend renting if you don’t bring your own.Overall, an amazing experience and we would highly recommend this company. Matthew W2025-07-02Verified Seamless and Supportive Inca Trail Experience – Highly Recommend We recently completed the 4-day Classic Inca Trail trek with Quechuas Expeditions in June 2025, and overall had a fantastic experience that struck the perfect balance between physical challenge and logistical ease. Our guide, Fernando (“Nando”), was outstanding—passionate, deeply knowledgeable about the trail’s rich history, and highly supportive throughout. He kept our group motivated and informed, and managed different paces and needs with professionalism and care. His English was great, and he always made time to answer questions or share interesting stories along the way.The porter and chef team were phenomenal. Every meal was different, delicious, and plentiful—we were never hungry, and dietary needs (including vegan and vegetarian) were handled without issue. They even baked a custom cake on the trail for a couple’s anniversary, which speaks volumes about their care and capability. The porters themselves were friendly, warm, and constantly going above and beyond to support us.Quechuas provided tents, sleeping bags, a toilet tent, and hot water for face washing each morning, plus coca tea as a wake-up touch. The duffel service was useful, though we did find the weight limits a bit tighter than expected once you factor in the sleeping bag. In the end, we paid for an extra porter—which was easy to arrange but worth noting for those planning their packing. One thing we didn’t know in advance: the porter bags aren’t waterproof, so future trekkers may want to use dry bags or line the inside with plastic.Another small consideration: due to how campsites are assigned (by the government, not the tour company), some days ended up being longer than the traditional day-by-day breakdown you might read online. While not Quechuas’ fault, for myself, as much heads-up as possible would’ve helped with my own mental preparation. All said, Quechuas Expeditions delivered where it mattered most. The logistics were smooth, the staff was superb, and their support allowed us to focus on enjoying the trail and the breathtaking views without worrying about the rest. This is a company that knows what it’s doing.Would I recommend them? Absolutely—whether you’re a first-time trekker or experienced hiker, they make an unforgettable journey that much more seamless and enjoyable. If I ever do this again, I would book with them without question, and if possible, request the exact same team. Thank you Fernando and team for a trip of a lifetime and memories that will stay with me forever 🙏 Arianna O2025-07-01Verified Amazing trip on the Inca Trail with Quechuas Expeditions I never imagined that the Inca Trail could be so transformative. My partner and I decided to do the classic 4-day trek with Quechuas Expeditions and, honestly, it exceeded all our expectations. From the very first moment we felt very welcome. The service was impeccable, they were always attentive to our needs, solving all our doubts before and during the trek. The hike was not easy, but the views, the fresh mountain air and the energy of the group kept us going without thinking about how tiring it was. The meals at the campsites surprised us pleasantly, we really did not expect so much variety and flavor in the middle of the mountain. And the end, reaching Machu Picchu through the sun gate (Inti Punku) was simply magical, there are no words to describe that moment. It is definitely a unique experience that connects you with the history, culture and nature of Peru. Thank you Quechuas Expeditions for making this trip so special! naomiammar2025-06-28Verified Hardest challenge of my life but worth it One of the hardest things I have ever done (definitely underestimate the difficulty level), and I don’t know if I would have made it if it wasn’t for our awesome guide Frenando and all the amazing staff we had. What a fantastic group of people. The porters are so hard working, it’s so humbling. The chef Taco was fantastic! I am vegan and he made me the most amazing food the entire time. I couldn’t believe it. And then our guide Fernando topped it all. Knowledgeable, professional yet fun, very personable, very patient (we were slow!) and very encouraging. If you are considering taking on this challenge, I highly recommend Quechua’s Expeditions and if you can request Fernando. E sure to do so. He’s been doing this for 19yrs! cade c2025-06-27Verified Awesome trek We really enjoyed our trip. It was challenging and also rewarding. Beautiful views and even better food. I can’t rave enough about our cook Santiago! Food was unbelievable. Jose did a fantastic job leading us along the way. He did a good job of explaining what we are seeing! Looking for a physical challenge with beautiful views this is the trek for you. Lola U2025-06-20Verified Demanding, enriching and unforgettable thanks to the human team I will always be grateful to the rich food and attentions of Santiago, the cook, the professionalism and good advice of José, the guide, the kindness of the helpers, who have made it possible to improve the experience. Julia C.2025-06-16Verified Amazing trek, amazing guide and staff The Salkantay Trek was absolutely stunning, domes and the views were great with hot water available. What the trek made very special was our guide Nildo. Also, the chef Julian, horseman and second guide were incredible too. Nildo was knowledgeable, caring and passionate about everything he shared. I cannot imagine a better guide :-) Everything was very well organized. Emelie A2025-06-15Verified Hike of a lifetime! We had the most amazing time! The different sceneries along the trek are just unbelievable and although being two fairly unfit persons we could enjoy it all the way. Fernando and Steven are terrific guides making sure we were all comfortable and happy at all times. The food and accommodations along the way were also a lot more luxurious than what we’d expected. Would 100% recommend this to anyone who’s up for a hike!!
