Frequently Asked Questions – Ausangate Trek 2 Days | Rainbow Mountain & 7 Lakes

How difficult is the Ausangate Trek 2 Days?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging due to the high altitude. Although the hiking distances are manageable, the elevation above 4,500 meters (14,760 ft) requires good physical fitness and proper acclimatization.

Do I need to acclimatize before the trek?

Yes. We highly recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before starting the trek to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

What is the highest altitude reached during the tour?

The highest point is Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) at 5,036 m (16,522 ft) above sea level.

You’ll hike approximately 18 km (11 miles) over two days:

Day 1: Around 6 km (3.7 miles)
Day 2: Around 12 km (7.5 miles)

Is this trek suitable for beginners?

Yes, if you are in good physical condition and properly acclimatized. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not required.

Yes. Horses are available for rent through local communities, especially during the Rainbow Mountain hike. They are subject to availability and paid directly to the local horse handlers.

Not everyone does, but the high elevation can affect anyone. Acclimatizing beforehand, staying hydrated, and hiking at a comfortable pace greatly reduce the chances.

What is the weather like?

Temperatures vary throughout the day. Expect sunny mornings, cool afternoons, and cold nights. During the rainy season, afternoon showers are common.

Travel insurance is not mandatory but is highly recommended for all trekking adventures in Peru.
