Your adventure begins at 5:00 am, when we collect you from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. We drive for roughly two hours toward KM 82, the official gateway to the Classic Inca Trail. Along the way, we stop in the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo to enjoy a scenic breakfast with panoramic Sacred Valley views.
Upon arriving at KM 82, we complete the registration process at the checkpoint, passport required and begin our 5-Day. Starting from this iconic point allows you to follow the original, most traditional route used by Inca messengers as they traveled toward Machu Picchu. From here, the trail gently winds along the right bank of the Urubamba River, passing through important archaeological sites such as Llactapata and Machu Q’ente.
After approximately three hours of steady hiking, we cross the river via a suspension bridge built upon ancient Inca foundations, continuing toward Chamana, where our first campsite is located. A freshly cooked lunch awaits your arrival.
In the afternoon, your guide will lead a short, enriching hike to Wayna Q’ente, an elevated Inca complex offering sweeping views over the valley. We end the day camping near the impressive Patallacta ruins, surrounded by the tranquility of the Chamana community.
The day begins with a soft wake-up call and a warm cup of freshly brewed coffee or coca tea delivered to your tent, allowing you to greet the mountains in comfort. After a nourishing breakfast, we set out along a peaceful stretch of trail toward the impressive Patallacta ruins, an expansive agricultural and administrative complex strategically positioned above the valley. Visiting early in the morning offers a rare sense of solitude and connection to the site’s ancient purpose.
We continue along the picturesque Cusichaca River, following gentle terrain toward the traditional Andean settlement of Wayllabamba. Here, surrounded by cultivated terraces and local families tending their fields, we pause for a well-earned lunch prepared by our chef.
In the afternoon, we begin the ascent toward Llulluchapampa, gradually transitioning through a series of striking ecological zones. The path winds through lush cloud forest draped in orchids, ferns, and bromeliads before opening into the sweeping highlands. Along the way, keep an eye out for hummingbirds, tanagers, and the occasional deer moving through the undergrowth.
As elevation increases, the landscape shifts to open puna grasslands with clear, uninterrupted views of Mt. Huayanay. We also pass through a rare stand of queuña (Polylepis) forest, known for its twisted bark and its role as one of the highest-growing tree species in the world.
We arrive at Llulluchapampa, positioned just below the challenging ascent to Warmiwañusqa (Dead Woman’s Pass). Here, you can unwind with optional massages, hot drinks, and the attentive service of the Quechuas Expeditions team while you settle into camp. Dinner is served as the sun sets and the crisp high-altitude night sky reveals a breathtaking canopy of stars.
Today marks the most demanding and rewarding section of the Inca Trail. After an early breakfast, we begin the steady ascent toward Warmiwañusqa (Dead Woman’s Pass), the highest point of the trail at 4,215 m / 13,829 ft. Reaching the summit is a true achievement, rewarded with sweeping panoramic views across the Andes, an ideal moment for photos and quiet reflection.
From the pass, we descend for approximately two hours to Pacaymayo Alto, where a well-earned lunch is served beside the flowing stream, allowing time to rest and recharge.
In the afternoon, we climb once more toward the Runkurakay Pass (4,000 m / 13,123 ft). Along this historic section, we explore a series of remarkable Inca sites, including Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, and Conchamarca, each strategically positioned along the ancient route and offering insight into Inca engineering, defense, and communication systems.
As the trail continues, the landscape opens to dramatic vistas stretching toward the Salkantay and Vilcabamba mountain ranges, with clouds drifting below the path. After approximately three more hours of hiking, we arrive at our campsite in Phuyupatamarca, known as the “Town Above the Clouds,” where misty views, attentive service, and optional massages await.
We end the day with a nourishing dinner as the sun sets over the mountains and the night settles gently across the high Andes.
Day 4: Phuyupatamarca – Wiñaywayna – Machu Picchu Pueblo
With the most demanding sections of the Inca Trail behind you, today offers a more relaxed pace and one of the most rewarding walks of the entire journey. This stretch is widely considered the most scenic and emotionally powerful day, combining diverse landscapes, remarkable archaeology, and your first encounter with Machu Picchu.
The trail descends gently through a succession of ecosystems, from high Andean ridges to lush cloud forest, rich in orchids, mosses, and birdlife. Along the way, we visit Phuyupatamarca, the legendary “City in the Clouds,” where sweeping views unfold over the Urubamba River, Machu Picchu Mountain, and the surrounding valleys. We then continue to Intipata, the beautifully preserved “Terraces of the Sun,” where you’ll have time to rest, reflect, and fully absorb the magic of the setting.
By approximately 11:00 am, we arrive at Wiñaywayna, one of the most important and impressive Inca sites on the trail. Lunch is served here, followed by free time to relax while your guide shares the history, symbolism, and engineering brilliance of this extraordinary complex.
In the afternoon, we walk for about an hour to the legendary Inti Punku (Sun Gate). From this iconic viewpoint, you’ll enjoy your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. On clear days, the sight of the sun descending over the citadel creates a truly unforgettable moment, one that remains etched in memory long after the journey ends.
We then begin our gentle one-hour descent toward Machu Picchu, arriving late in the day when the crowds have thinned. This timing allows you to capture stunning photographs of the sacred city in a peaceful, almost mystical atmosphere. Afterward, we take the bus down to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), where you’ll enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and settle into your hotel for a comfortable night’s rest.
Your final day begins before dawn, as we prepare for the most anticipated highlight of the journey: Machu Picchu, the legendary Lost City of the Incas. After an early breakfast at your hotel, we board the bus for a scenic ascent to the citadel. Arriving as the sky begins to glow, you’ll have the opportunity, weather permitting, to witness the unforgettable sunrise over this sacred sanctuary.
Your expert guide will then lead a comprehensive 2 to 2.5-hour guided tour, revealing the history, symbolism, and architectural mastery of Machu Picchu’s most important sectors. As you walk through temples, terraces, and ceremonial plazas, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of why this site remains one of the most extraordinary achievements of the ancient world.
Following the guided visit, you’ll have free time to explore independently or, for those who reserved in advance, to ascend Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for breathtaking panoramic views (subject to availability and prior reservation).
After completing your visit, enjoy a refined buffet lunch at the Tinkuy Restaurant at the Sanctuary Lodge Hotel, the only hotel located at the entrance of Machu Picchu. In the afternoon, we begin the return journey aboard the exclusive panoramic train, offering comfort and sweeping views as you travel back through the Sacred Valley to Cusco, bringing your Deluxe Inca Trail experience to a memorable close.

Posted on Sara DVerified 10/10 Experience - Would Recommend! We had an amazing time on the Salkantay 5 Day Trek. Before the trip started, Quechuas had great communication and was very accommodating to our travel schedule, including adjusting our briefing time with our guide. The skydome accomodations were great (all fairly spacious, with exception of night 2, which was fine as we didn’t spend much time there), the food was delicious (a great variety and always more than enough to go around) and the trek itself was beautiful. Our guide Steven, as well as second guide Jorge, were very patient, knowledgeable and kind to us and the others in our group - not only did we get to see incredible scenery but we also learned a lot about the local landscape and culture. We rented sleeping bags, which we would highly recommend. We brought our own hiking poles but would recommend renting if you don’t bring your own.Overall, an amazing experience and we would highly recommend this company.Posted on Matthew WVerified Seamless and Supportive Inca Trail Experience – Highly Recommend We recently completed the 4-day Classic Inca Trail trek with Quechuas Expeditions in June 2025, and overall had a fantastic experience that struck the perfect balance between physical challenge and logistical ease. Our guide, Fernando (“Nando”), was outstanding—passionate, deeply knowledgeable about the trail’s rich history, and highly supportive throughout. He kept our group motivated and informed, and managed different paces and needs with professionalism and care. His English was great, and he always made time to answer questions or share interesting stories along the way.The porter and chef team were phenomenal. Every meal was different, delicious, and plentiful—we were never hungry, and dietary needs (including vegan and vegetarian) were handled without issue. They even baked a custom cake on the trail for a couple’s anniversary, which speaks volumes about their care and capability. The porters themselves were friendly, warm, and constantly going above and beyond to support us.Quechuas provided tents, sleeping bags, a toilet tent, and hot water for face washing each morning, plus coca tea as a wake-up touch. The duffel service was useful, though we did find the weight limits a bit tighter than expected once you factor in the sleeping bag. In the end, we paid for an extra porter—which was easy to arrange but worth noting for those planning their packing. One thing we didn’t know in advance: the porter bags aren’t waterproof, so future trekkers may want to use dry bags or line the inside with plastic.Another small consideration: due to how campsites are assigned (by the government, not the tour company), some days ended up being longer than the traditional day-by-day breakdown you might read online. While not Quechuas’ fault, for myself, as much heads-up as possible would’ve helped with my own mental preparation. All said, Quechuas Expeditions delivered where it mattered most. The logistics were smooth, the staff was superb, and their support allowed us to focus on enjoying the trail and the breathtaking views without worrying about the rest. This is a company that knows what it’s doing.Would I recommend them? Absolutely—whether you’re a first-time trekker or experienced hiker, they make an unforgettable journey that much more seamless and enjoyable. If I ever do this again, I would book with them without question, and if possible, request the exact same team. Thank you Fernando and team for a trip of a lifetime and memories that will stay with me forever 🙏Posted on Arianna OVerified Amazing trip on the Inca Trail with Quechuas Expeditions I never imagined that the Inca Trail could be so transformative. My partner and I decided to do the classic 4-day trek with Quechuas Expeditions and, honestly, it exceeded all our expectations. From the very first moment we felt very welcome. The service was impeccable, they were always attentive to our needs, solving all our doubts before and during the trek. The hike was not easy, but the views, the fresh mountain air and the energy of the group kept us going without thinking about how tiring it was. The meals at the campsites surprised us pleasantly, we really did not expect so much variety and flavor in the middle of the mountain. And the end, reaching Machu Picchu through the sun gate (Inti Punku) was simply magical, there are no words to describe that moment. It is definitely a unique experience that connects you with the history, culture and nature of Peru. Thank you Quechuas Expeditions for making this trip so special!Posted on naomiammarVerified Hardest challenge of my life but worth it One of the hardest things I have ever done (definitely underestimate the difficulty level), and I don’t know if I would have made it if it wasn’t for our awesome guide Frenando and all the amazing staff we had. What a fantastic group of people. The porters are so hard working, it’s so humbling. The chef Taco was fantastic! I am vegan and he made me the most amazing food the entire time. I couldn’t believe it. And then our guide Fernando topped it all. Knowledgeable, professional yet fun, very personable, very patient (we were slow!) and very encouraging. If you are considering taking on this challenge, I highly recommend Quechua’s Expeditions and if you can request Fernando. E sure to do so. He’s been doing this for 19yrs!Posted on cade cVerified Awesome trek We really enjoyed our trip. It was challenging and also rewarding. Beautiful views and even better food. I can’t rave enough about our cook Santiago! Food was unbelievable. Jose did a fantastic job leading us along the way. He did a good job of explaining what we are seeing! Looking for a physical challenge with beautiful views this is the trek for you.Posted on Lola UVerified Demanding, enriching and unforgettable thanks to the human team I will always be grateful to the rich food and attentions of Santiago, the cook, the professionalism and good advice of José, the guide, the kindness of the helpers, who have made it possible to improve the experience.Posted on Julia C.Verified Amazing trek, amazing guide and staff The Salkantay Trek was absolutely stunning, domes and the views were great with hot water available. What the trek made very special was our guide Nildo. Also, the chef Julian, horseman and second guide were incredible too. Nildo was knowledgeable, caring and passionate about everything he shared. I cannot imagine a better guide :-) Everything was very well organized.Posted on Emelie AVerified Hike of a lifetime! We had the most amazing time! The different sceneries along the trek are just unbelievable and although being two fairly unfit persons we could enjoy it all the way. Fernando and Steven are terrific guides making sure we were all comfortable and happy at all times. The food and accommodations along the way were also a lot more luxurious than what we’d expected. Would 100% recommend this to anyone who’s up for a hike!!
