The Huarocondo Inca Quarry Trail Peru Trek, if it exists or has gained popularity since my last update, might be a less-traveled route compared to the classic Inca Trail. Such treks often offer a chance to explore less crowded archaeological sites, interact with local communities, and witness stunning natural scenery.
Typically, these trekking routes involve traversing ancient Inca pathways, passing through remote villages, and discovering lesser-known ruins. Trekkers may encounter archaeological sites, stone quarries, and terraced fields along the way, showcasing the advanced engineering and agricultural techniques of the ancient Incas.
During the trek, participants might experience changes in altitude and encounter diverse ecosystems, from high Andean plateaus to lush cloud forests. The final destination of such treks is often Machu Picchu, where trekkers can marvel at the iconic Inca citadel and its surrounding mystical atmosphere.

We come to pick you up from your hotel and drive by private van to the trailhead, we do our first stop to explore the Quillarumiyoc ruins. where we will find many incan archeological remains, it was a religious center. The Moonstone is a large carving on an enormous lime stone boulder, and it was importante for his quechuan society.after exploring this site we keep going to the place where all our local mountain staff will be waiting for us like horsemen and the horses and as soon as we are there we start walking up to (pre-incan site of wata) where have a nice spot to have lunch with a nice view of Urubamba moutain range after having lunch your guide will explain you the story of wata after that we take the path co along a green side valley where we appreciate below the valley a few small villages before to go in the village of Chillipawa, where we camp.
After a good breakfast we start our trek climbing up with several stops to enjoy the view of the valley and the high land mountains and high pampas with a lot of high land grass, We normally stop for lunch shortly before the pass of Accoccosa the highest point of the trek. The last part of the pass is on loose red gravel, but the view from the top makes it all worthwhile: a broad, hidden valley surrounded by snowy and glaciers peaks the Huayanay Mountain Range on the left, the Urubamba Mountain Range straight ahead and beautiful, pyramidal Veronica Mountain 5,800m.a.s.l./19,024ft. to the right. We have time to explore this plateau and experience walking in the high lands before continuing to our camp we can do some optional hike around this area. Our campsite is close to a single farmer family in a big flat or pampa called Chancachuco.
After breakfast we follow the stream down to the narrow canyon with polylepis trees forest, after the canyon the path turns North and traverses very high above a deep and steep valley separating us from the Huayanay Mountains. This is probably the most spectacular section of the trek and we trek under the Inca aqueduct spectacularly carved out of the cliffs to take water from the Chancachuco Valley to the Sacred Valley several miles away. At the end of the traverse we have a short steep climb up to our lunch place, flat with spectacular view of Sacred Valley and the snowy and glacier Urubamba mountain Range. After lunch we explore the Huayrapunku. Meaning “Gate of the Wind”, this is a single Inca remain on the top of the mountain which one is to Veronica Mountain, Finally a short walk brings us to our final campsite in amongst the granite stones of the Cachiqata Quarry. It was here that huge blocks were cut from the pink granite before dragged down the mountainside and across the Vilcanota River to the Sun Temple at Ollantaytambo town.
Mornings usually spectacular, to see the sun rise over the Sacred Valley from our campsite high above it. The sun’s first rays catching the glaciers of Veronica Mountain, This is our last day on the trek and we descend from the pampas down into the lush valley floor along the enormous stone ramps on which the Incas dragged the stones. We cross the river and explore the huge Sun Temple at Ollantaytambo Inca site complex. Then we board the train to Aguas Calientes.
Early in the morning, we’ll catch the bus up to the Inca city of Machu Picchu to enjoy a guided tour or this enigmatic site. After the tour there will be time to wander around and appreciate the beauty and mystery of Machu Picchu. Later on, you may choose to climb Wayna Picchu 2,600m.a.s.l. / 8,850ft. the peak overlooking the area. Around mid-afternoon we’ll catch the bus back to the train station for the return trip to Cusco. The tracks run along the Urubamba river valley, the route taken by Hiram Bingham in 1911 when he re-discovered Machu Picchu. On the arrival to Cusco we transfer to the hotel.

The Huarocondo Inca Quarry Trail in Peru is an off-the-beaten-path trek that offers a deeper look at the Inca history and landscapes compared to more popular routes like the Inca Trail. The trek lasts about 5 days and takes you through stunning Andean scenery, Inca archaeological sites, and traditional villages. Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the Huarocondo Inca Quarry Trail:
The Huarocondo Inca Quarry Trail is a 5-day trek in the Sacred Valley of Peru that connects various Inca sites, including an Inca quarry, through picturesque mountain paths and remote villages. This lesser-known route follows ancient Inca paths and offers a rich cultural experience along with stunning views.
The trail is considered moderate to challenging. The high altitude and steep ascents can be demanding, but most hikers with good fitness levels can complete the trek. Altitudes range from 2,500 to 4,200 meters (8,200 to 13,780 feet), so acclimatization is important.
Yes, the trek requires permits, but since it is less popular than the Inca Trail, the number of people trekking the Huarocondo route is usually limited. It is highly recommended to book your trek through a certified tour operator who will handle the permit process.
The best time to trek the Huarocondo Inca Quarry Trail is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is more stable with clear skies and minimal rain. The wet season (October to April) can bring heavy rains, making the trail more challenging.
The trek reaches altitudes of up to 4,200 meters (13,780 feet). The altitude can be challenging, so it’s important to acclimatize in Cusco or the Sacred Valley for a few days before starting the trek.
The trek requires a certified guide, as you need permits and support for safety reasons. Doing it independently is not recommended or allowed unless you’re with an approved guide and agency.

Our guide Fernando Illapa taught us a lot about Inca history and the Andean way of life. He and our cook were very attentive and cordial throughout the experience. Our food was amazing and the camping equipment in perfect condition. D r2024-01-27Verified an unforgettable experience It was a wonderful experience. From the beginning Wayra gave us all the information, always attentive and answering all our questions. During the trip we had Fernando Illapa as our guide. We must say that he is a great professional, thoroughly knowledgeable about the path and with a great sense of humor and a lot of patience, which made everything easier in the most demanding moments of the Inca trail. The accompanying team is very organized and I must say that the food exceeded our expectations. Dishes that could well be served in a restaurant and extremely abundant. We did the road with my husband and there were very difficult sections of great physical demand, but the impressive landscapes and discovering archaeological sites along the way make it worth it. We were also fortunate to have excellent travel companions. An unforgettable experience with the help of a professional team that paid attention to all the details.
