We arrive in Mollepata, a picturesque Andean town located at approximately 2,800 m (9,186 ft) above sea level. Here, we will stop at a local restaurant for a freshly prepared breakfast. Your professional guide will also provide an introduction to the trek, including important recommendations and safety information to help you enjoy the journey comfortably.

After breakfast, we continue by private transportation toward Challacancha, the starting point of our trek.

Challacancha – Beginning of Your Luxury Salkantay Adventure

At Challacancha, you will meet our dedicated trekking support team, including the professional chef and muleteers who will accompany and assist us throughout the journey. After checking the equipment and making sure everything is properly organized, we begin our hike toward Soraypampa.

The first section of the trail follows a relatively gentle path through the beautiful Andean landscape. Along the way, you will enjoy views of impressive snow-capped peaks and distant glaciers. We will also follow sections of a traditional Inca irrigation canal, which continues to provide water for local communities today.

As we progress toward Soraypampa, the trail gradually becomes steeper. The changing scenery and spectacular mountain views make this a rewarding introduction to the Salkantay Trek.

Arrival at Soraypampa – Luxury Sky Lodge Dome

After reaching approximately 3,800–3,900 m (12,467–12,795 ft), we arrive at Soraypampa, home to our exclusive Luxury Sky Lodge Domes.

Instead of traditional camping, you will spend your first night in a comfortable Luxury Sky Lodge Dome, surrounded by some of the most impressive mountain scenery in the Cusco region.

Upon arrival, our team will welcome you with a freshly brewed cup of Peruvian coffee or Andean tea. You will then have time to settle into your private dome and enjoy its comfortable surroundings before lunch.

Hike to Humantay Lake

After lunch, we begin one of the most spectacular experiences of the day: the hike to the famous Humantay Lake.

Located at approximately 4,200 m (13,780 ft) above sea level, Humantay Lake is renowned for its striking turquoise waters, created by the surrounding glacial landscape. The lake is approximately 3 km (1.86 miles) from our campsite.

The ascent is challenging due to the altitude, so we encourage you to walk at your own pace while taking time to appreciate the spectacular scenery. Your guide will accompany you throughout the hike, providing assistance and information about the region, local traditions, and the importance of Humantay Lake in Andean culture and mythology.

Upon reaching the lake, you will have plenty of time to admire the turquoise waters, take photographs, and simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remarkable high-altitude destination.

Afterward, we begin our descent back to Soraypampa. Once we return to camp, you can relax in your Luxury Sky Lodge Dome while our culinary team prepares dinner.

Salkantay Pass – The Highest Point of the Trek

After breakfast, we begin our ascent toward the legendary Salkantay Pass, located at approximately 4,630 m (15,190 ft) above sea level.

The trail takes us along the famous “Trail of the Seven Snakes,” a series of winding switchbacks that gradually climb toward the pass. Due to the high altitude, this section requires a steady and comfortable pace. Our experienced guide will set the pace according to the group, allowing you to take regular breaks, catch your breath, and fully appreciate the spectacular surroundings.

As we climb higher, the views become increasingly impressive. The majestic Salkantay Peak dominates the landscape, surrounded by rugged mountain slopes, glaciers, and snow-covered summits.

From the High Andes to the Cloud Forest

After lunch, the landscape begins to transform dramatically as we leave the high Andes behind and descend toward the warmer cloud-forest region.

We will hike approximately 8 km (5 miles) over around three hours, following a gradual downhill trail. As we lose altitude, the temperatures become warmer and the vegetation becomes increasingly lush and diverse.

Today’s hike is considerably more relaxed than the previous day. We begin our descent through the spectacular Santa Teresa Valley, an area renowned for its fertile farmland, lush vegetation, waterfalls, and warmer climate.

After crossing the Lluscamayo River, we continue along a scenic trail toward La Playa Loreta, hiking for approximately six hours at a comfortable pace.

As we descend, you will experience another dramatic transformation in the landscape. The cool mountain environment gradually gives way to a warmer and greener ecosystem, filled with tropical vegetation and agricultural plantations.

Waterfalls, Coffee & Tropical Plantations

The trail is surrounded by numerous waterfalls and streams, creating a refreshing atmosphere as we make our way through the valley.

The trail initially takes us through lush vegetation and along sections of an original Inca Trail, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. As we continue, you will have the opportunity to catch your first distant glimpses of Machu Picchu Mountain, creating an exciting sense of anticipation for the following day’s visit.

Llactapata Inca Archaeological Site

One of the highlights of today’s journey is our visit to the fascinating Llactapata Inca archaeological site, located at approximately 2,700 m (8,858 ft) above sea level.

We hike uphill toward this remarkable archaeological complex, strategically positioned in the mountains with an impressive view toward the Machu Picchu area.

Llactapata is the first major Inca archaeological site you will visit on this 5-Day Luxury Salkantay Trek, making it an important cultural highlight of the journey.

At Hidroelectrica, our team will serve a freshly prepared lunch, giving you time to relax and recharge before continuing to Aguas Calientes.

After lunch, you have two options for reaching Aguas Calientes:

Option 1 – Scenic Train:
Enjoy an approximately 45-minute train journey from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes, allowing you to relax and admire the surrounding scenery without additional hiking.

Option 2 – Walk Along the Railway:
For travelers who prefer to continue hiking, we highly recommend the approximately 2.5–3-hour scenic walk along the railway toward Aguas Calientes. This section offers a unique perspective of the surrounding mountains and cloud forest.

During the walk, you may have the opportunity to see Intihuatana, an important Inca stone associated with astronomical observation and the sun. Your guide will explain its cultural significance and its relationship to other important structures in the Machu Picchu area.
