Bolivia, Peru
Colonial Lima, Cusco, Sacsayhuaman, The Sacred Valley, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes, Peru's Challenge Community Project, Pumamarca Inca Ruins, Lake Titicaca, La Paz, Uyuni Salt Plains, Potosi, Sucre
Leaving colonial Lima behind we fly to Cusco, the cultural heart and former seat of power of the Inca empire. Here we visit the historic city centre and wander the ruins of the Sacsayhuaman temple site before travelling out into the beautiful 'Sacred Valley' and the colourful towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo. At the far end of the valley is the most spectacular ruins of all, magnificent Machu Picchu, forgotten for centuries by the outside world until rediscovered by archaeologists in 1911. Further east, high in the Andes on the border with Bolivia, we discover Lake Titicaca, situated on the Altiplano at 3812 metres. Crossing the frontier we visit the capital of La Paz before arriving at the vast, shimmering plains of the Salar de Uyuni - the largest salt flat in the world. From the silver rich town of Potosi it is a short drive to Sucre where we discover the charm of this colonial city in its fine, imposing whitewashed buildings and its narrow streets, home to the city's great houses and numerous convents and churches.
